When Windows Vista is released, the default email program Outlook Express will be rebranded as "Windows Mail".

When Windows Vista is released, the default email program Outlook Express will be rebranded as “Windows Mail”. (You can read in an earlier post how the similarities with Apple Mail, its main competitor in the default OS email client stakes, are more significant than the name alone).

The latest beta of Vista (version 5342) was released on 24 March. Screenshots of the OS in general can be found on x64bit.net.

As well as “the glass look” and innovative features like windows that “flip” in 3D, the new beta offers a “sidebar”, into which you can drop things that look like widgets.

A screenshot of Windows Mail from this latest beta has been posted on the German site winfuture.de. Here it is:

Click the picture for a full-sized image

Unfortunately the “About Windows Mail” dialog obscures some of the interface, but I think you can get the general idea of the way in which the new look Outlook Express is developing. Spooky.

It looks a lot better than recent screenshots of the next Outlook at any rate.<tags>windows vista, windows mail, apple mail, mail.app, email, screenshot, sidebar</tags>Similar Posts:

Gavin Shearer (who works at Microsoft on Projec Planning for Visio) has a cunning theory about Mac OS X and Windows compatibility. He thinks that OS 10.5 Leopard will run Windows "out of the box" easily, quickly and completely.

He thinks that OS 10.5 <tag>Leopard</tag> will run <tag>Windows Vista</tag> “out of the box” easily, quickly and completely.

As he sees it, this is “the centerpiece of <tag>Apple’s strategy</tag> for the next 5 years”. It will be Cupertino’s Trojan Horse, leading to a doubling of Apple’s current <tag>market share</tag> in two years.

In the brave new Leopard world <tag>Windows XP</tag> will become the “new <tag>Classic</tag>“, he predicts.

In the next version of Windows, known as "Vista", Outlook Express is set to become "Windows Mail".

In the next version of Windows, known as “Vista”, Outlook Express is set to become “Windows Mail”.

It will feature advanced spam-handling abilities and better search capabilities with a “search as you type” function. Windows Mail will also have a new way of storing emails as individual files and a new database for indexing them, which will make searching emails outside Windows Mail itself easier. Sounds just like the sort of things one would want in an email client!

Microsoft has released a 46 minute video about Windows Mail. You can watch it here (and read about it on the blog of the development team head, Bryan Starbuck).
