Notepad widget going cheap — only today

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

NotepadNotepad is a widget that takes the Sidenote idea to the Dashboard.

It is a note-taker with built-in searching, printing, resize features, iPod syncing, locking, lists and sketching.

It also comes with three nice skins:

Notepad Skins

The tickable lists obviously lend themselves to to-do lists. A drop-down list at the bottom of the widget offers quick access to all the notes, which can also be exported as text files.

For today only, you can get it for 38% off through MacUpdate’s new “MacZOT-like” cheap-for-a-day promotion .

Normally Notepad costs USD 7.95. For the next 17 hours or so you can get it for USD 4.95.

xCut: Keyboard Shortcut Reference widget

Monday, August 21st, 2006

x_cuts_iconThe Dashboard widget xCuts is a keyboard shortcuts reference that lets you easily browse the shortcuts for Mac OS X, Quicksilver and more.

A recent update adds a section for switchers, which gives them easy access to the Mac OS X equivalents for the Windows shortcuts they already know.

To save space, the widget can be collapsed to the small size of the graphic in the top right of this post. When you need it, click on it to expand to the full interface:

x_cuts_main

Searches can be focussed by category, scope and object. The magic is powered by a MySQL database, accessed over the web with Ajax.

xCuts is freeware and is available from the developer’s web site .

Howler of the Year?

SwiftMail: Gmail, .Mac, Yahoo or AOL from the Dashboard

Monday, July 31st, 2006

widget_100pxWith the SwiftMail Dashboard widget, you can quickly dash off an email using your Gmail, .Mac, Yahoo or AOL email account.

It offers a quick username and password setup or the option of entering detailed server information.

The widget saves the last five subject lines and the recipients in drop-down boxes to the right of the fields:

swift_mail

Call me a pre-Tiger throw-back if you like, but I don’t see the point of these email widgets.

It’s no faster than switching to Mail.app or using Quicksilver to dash off the note.

Perhaps it is faster than switching to Entourage or Thunderbird or the web-based interface of those services.

You can get the freeware widget from the developer’s web site .

UPDATE: Once briefly QuickMail before becoming SwiftMail (briefly), the widget is now called “DashMail” (for the moment).

Cloud.lic.io.us: a delic.io.us widget

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

cloudilious_iconCloud.lic.io.us is a widget that helps you quickly access your delic.io.us tags and bookmarks.

A new version was released today, which adds a “fancy slider” to the widget and a fix for changes in the delic.io.us API.

The widget offers a number of options to control the display of your tags.

You can choose — as you can in delic.io.us itself — to view only tags with one, two or five matches and more:

cloudilicious

Clicking one of the tags opens a slider drawer which displays the matching URLs. You can click on them to open them directly or jump to the display of the URLs in delic.io.us itself by clicking the arrow on the bottom of the drawer:

Screenshot Plus: Smarter, faster screenshots

Monday, July 10th, 2006

dashboard100pxIf you spend a lot of time taking screenshots (as I do), you will like Screenshot Plus, an image capture widget with a very neat trick up its sleeve.

Like other screenshot widgets (Capture for example) it can take fullscreen grabs, selections or particular windows. Unlike Capture, it can also do timed screenshots and grab individual widgets. These options are presented nicely on the front of the widget:

screenshotplus

On the rear, the widget offers something truly time-saving. By default it displays the screenshot as a preview after capture, but you can set it (as above) to import the screenshot directly into your image editor of choice.

In my case that’s Photoshop. The time (and finger-wear) I will save by not clicking and dragging from Desktop to app is immense. It will even launch the editor for you if it’s not already open.

Of course, I can still make a cup of coffee while Photoshop loads, but that’s not the widget’s fault.

A drop-down menu allows you to specify your destination of choice—another image editor or iPhoto or whatever.

Images can be captured as png, tiff, jpg, jp2, pdf, gif, bmp, or pict files.

A new version released a few days ago adds 10.4.7 compatibility and better French language support.

Screenshot Plus is freeware and available from the developer’s web site . screenshot, capture, images, productivity, widget, time-saving, helpful apps, not apple mail

Reminder widget: Remember things easily

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

ical100pxReminder is a useful little Dashboard widget that allows you to create quick reminders to yourself in iCal, rather like a local version of the Reminders feature in Backpack .

Entering the reminder is easy.

After installation, just call up the Dashboard, enter the time after which you want the reminder and a summary of whatever you need to remember:

reminder

A reviewer on dashboardwidgets.com says, “Just the most useful widget so far for me!”

Reminder is freeware and is available from the developer’s web site ical, reminders, widget, dashboard, clever little piece of work
