Microsoft has relented and deferred the transition from WebDAV to its own DeltaSync standard. This means that Mail.app users with HTTPMail and MacFreePOPs plugins won’t be cut off on 30 June after all.

After listening to customer feedback from the original accouncement, Microsoft told its users “it became clear that you needed additional time to evaluate alternative solutions”.

Still, this only postpones the executioner’s axe. Don’t fritter away all the extra time Microsoft has given you in making a decision.

With apologies for any distress.

UPDATE: Not quite as bad as it sounds — See later post.

In April Microsoft announced that it would be terminating WebDAV access to its Hotmail accounts at the end of June this year and replacing it with a proprietary service of Microsoft’s own creation (DeltaSync).

This is bad news for Mail.app users with Hotmail accounts, who have been using utilities like HTTPMail and MacFreePOPs to access their email. After 30 June, they won’t work. (There are reports that 10.5.3 has broken HTTPMail for some users, merely hastening the inevitable).

For those unwilling to let go their Hotmail email address, another solution beckons. While the plugins might not work any more, a web-based service is offering the same function.

IzyMail , so it claims, “enables you to access webmail from major providers such as AOL, Yahoo, MSN, Hotmail, Windows Live, Fastmail or Gmail with any eMail application”. It even has a special page on setting up Hotmail on the iPhone.

It provides users with incoming and outcoming servers that can be plugged into Mail.app’s Accounts preferences. IzyMail does the heavy-lifting behind the scenes, and delivers fresh Hotmail into your Inbox via POP.

It offers free accounts (with some limitations) and a paid option (c. USD 18/year):

Or perhaps it’s time to take another look at Gmail. <tags>microsoft, hotmail, httpmail, macfreepops, wevdav, webmail, izymail, mail.app, apple mail, gmail, fastmail, yahoo, aol, desperate measures</tags>Similar Posts:

It’s now compatible with Leopard, and includes a fully universal version (0.2.5) of the FreePOPS engine.

Gina Trapani at Lifehacker has done all Gmail users an enormous favour with her Better Gmail extension for Firefox.

She has taken some of the best Greasemonkey scripts for Gmail and rolled them into a more user-friendly extension that adds (among other things): coloured labels, a mind-bending array of extra keyboard shortcuts, a fixed font option, larger attachment icons, skins and more.

It almost converted me. Almost.

Now the latest version (0.8) adds even more goodies — bottom posting for replies, Google Reader integration, fixed conversation previews, and a Mail.app skin:

Each option can be enabled or not as you like from the extension’s preferences.

Needless to say, with the labels feature and the extra keyboard shortcuts that Better Gmail provides, it is not very difficult to hack up a very efficient “Getting Things Done” (GTD) system, which doesn’t have all the polish of the tailor-made GTDInbox (formerly GTDMail) extension , but not everyone needs that kind of power.

It also makes managing mailing lists the work of a new keystrokes and can filter work emails from personal emails quickly and easily.

I could go on and on.

Marriage is for life, we like to hope. Mail.app and me are forever (obviously), but — golly! — the occasional harmless flirt with Better Gmail is diverting! Try it out for yourself.<tags>gmail, mail.app, skins, email, labels, keyboard shortcuts, productivity, GTS, Getting things done, webmail, alluring</tags>Similar Posts:

MacFreePOPs 2.0, just released, adds two nice new features of the mix.

It now includes an auto-updater, which means that users no longer need to go through the hassle of manually updating the separate plugins for each individual web service. It also checks for updates to the main MacFreePOPs application and the underlying freepopsd engine which powers the plugins:

It is now also “half-universal”. That is to say, parts of the app are now compiled as universal binaries, although the main app is still needs Rosetta to run on Intel Macs. The developer is appealing for donations from happy users to cover the USD 500 cost of new software needed to update the whole app. There is more on this in the app’s readme file.

A new reset/uninstall command is also included.

This update narrows the gap between MacFreePOPs (donation-ware, more complicated) and MailForward (shareware, easier to use).

Finally, work’s steam-powered SquirrelMail web interface is set for replacement with Zimbra, ushering in a Brave New World of Blazing Collaborative Productivity.

As a “fairly knowledgeable amateur” the IT Department has given me the job of trying to break it by doing stupid things. I haven’t succeeded yet.

Webmailer offers a way to remove one of the annoyances in using a web-based email service. It lets you set Zimbra (or Joyent’s webmail or Yahoo! or Roundcube or whatever) as the default email client, so that clicking on an email address opens a new message in the web-based interface of your choice.

After installing it, you need to add Zimbra to its list of options.

The string that works for me is:

https://SERVER/zimbra/mail?view=compose&to=[to]

Click a mailto: link and, as if my magic, Zimbra makes you a new message:

Nice.

Also nice are Zimbra’s new filing and tagging keyboard shortcuts, which make leaving Mail.app (temporarily) less of a wrench. By allocating numbers to the most-used tags and folders, it is possible to get close to the Nirvana that only a Mail.app GTD nut truly knows. <tags>mail.app, apple mail, GTD, Zimbra, webmail, default email client, productivity</tags>Similar Posts:

Webmailer is a System Preferences pane that offers a quick and easy way to set a variety of webmail clients as the default handler for composing new messages from mailto: links.

Gmail users already have options to achieve this, but this new utility makes the same feature available for users of a range of web-based services including .Mac, SquirrelMail, AOL, Hotmail, Horde, Roundcube and Yahoo!

After installing the preference pane, all you have to do is select webmailer as the default client and then select one of the preset webmail services:

The readme contains detailed instruction on how to create customised links for other webmail services.

The developer created Webmailer to ease a terrible affliction:

Ever click on a mailto: link, only to scream in frustration as Apple Mail opens yet again? The curse of the webmail user is that there is no way to get around this problem. That is, until now.

Webmailer comes in a Tiger and a Panther version due to the different ways in which default emailers are handed by the two systems.

Get the right one for you from the developer’s web site .

UPDATE: Works with Joyent too! See the comments.<tags>mail.app, apple mail, plugins, system preference, webmail, gmail, dotmac, .mac, yahoo, horde, squirrelmail, hotmail, email, mailto:</tags>Similar Posts:

His “marketing emails” are screwed by the way in which the new web interface handles CSS.

The old interface did a good job, he remembers. It “had amazing support for CSS and standards-based markup”.

But the new client wraps the whole email in a new DIV container:

This process is obviously aimed at foiling any modifications to the .Mac GUI caused by the use of type selectors. And if properly executed it would not impact the appearance of the source email. However, .Mac adds a gratuitous DIV just inside the new #messageCanvas DIV, consequently rendering all CSS useless…

As a result, direct marketers are faced with a dilemma:

So the result is that we’re at an impasse with .Mac: either we support other clients or we support .Mac. The former is the obvious choice, leaving us with .Mac emails looking like those rendered in Gmail and Hotmail. Bummer.

Or not.

(Hawk-eyed readers will notice that a coding work-around for this is presented in the comments to the original post.)<tags>.Mac, dotmac, webmail, interface, CSS, direct marketing, standards</tags>Similar Posts:

This year it’s How Apple doesn’t really understand email either on the Desktop or webmail.

The general sense is that Apple hasn’t performed well:

Don’t get me started on how it’s taken our favorite fruit half a decade just to build an almost-usable email client application (certainly won’t be business-class anytime this decade). I mean, waiting until 2007 just to have a proper email client? Super. Anyone else not really digging Apple’s lame attempts to manage email?

The name of the perfect email client against which Mail.app is judged so harshly is not revealed, nor are we told what will make Leopard Mail “proper”.

Still, it’s a good place to vent frustrations or to watch other people vent theirs (if you are into that sort of thing).<tags>mail.app, apple mail, bugs, apple, webmail, dotmac, leopard Mail</tags>Similar Posts:
