Mail.app Conduit allows you to transfer email messages between Mail.app and a Palm PDA.

An updated version (2.0.1) has been released, which now supports VersaMail 3.1 as well as Mark/Space Mail.

I don’t own one of these things and can’t test it for myself, but the reports I hear from others are very positive.

After installing the conduit in ~/Library/Application Support/Palm HotSync/Conduits, launching HotSync and selecting Apple Mail from the HotSync Manager, presents you with the following screen:

These preferences offer various options for the transfer that will mean something to Palm users.

Mail.app Conduit requires Mac OS 10.4 or later, Palm Desktop 4.0 or greater and a Palm OS-compatible PDA.

It is freeware although the developer does not refuse donations from satisfied users.

While checking out the latest version of QueueSyncMail (a conduit that syncs Entourage with Palm and now supports VersaMail 3.1, but doesn’t really belong on this blog), I discovered that MailUnreadStatusBar, my favourite menubar notification utility, also comes as a widget.

The widget is functional and elegant. The reverse side allows you to specify the mailbox to monitor and whether or not to animate the interface:

If you select “Animate”, the widget will scroll through the subject lines of the unread messages in that box.

It only monitors one mailbox at a time, but you can run multiple copies.

I don’t really understand the use of widgets for polling mailboxes, when excellent menubar utilities exist that offers this without the extra work needed to bring up the Dashboard.

But people who do understand it, might like to check this one out. It’s freeware and available from the developer’s web site.
