Mail stamp icons for Canada

Thursday, March 8th, 2007

canadamailstamp.jpgHaving seen the recent post on UK and USA Mail Stamp icons, Jesse Schooff emails to share a Mail stamp icon for Canada.

He writes:

Antony Ellam’s USA and UK stamps made me envious, so I made a shiny new mail icon for myself using one of our nice Canadian stamps. As per Antony’s convention, the postmark has been changed to Markham, Ontario, where Apple Canada is located. It looks very nice in my dock so I figured I’d share it.

You can download the icon from Hawk Wings.

There is also a Canadian stamp in the “Flags of the World” Mail stamp collection.

As I posted long ago, every Mail user needs to feel grateful towards Canada.

Due to some bizarre operation of Chaos Theory (Wikipedia ), people steeped in maple syrup, lacrosse, mounted policemen, French, the Barenaked Ladies and beaver tails are particularly good at producing top quality Mail.app plugins.

Changing Mail.app’s Dock icon is easy.

I’ve added it to the Hawk Wings Alternative Mail Stamps Icon list, which now contains 332 different icons. With glowing hearts we see thee rise.mail.app, apple mail, icons, dock icon, hack, tips, UK, Royal Mail, USA, stars and stripes

Frank Zappa Mail stamp icons!

Monday, March 5th, 2007

ZappamailiconstandfirstI’m too young to remember Frank Zappa (Wikipedia ), but funky older people tell me he was very cool.

The names of his children only hint at the depths of his creativity: Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan and Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen.

Duncan Moran thinks Zappa is great too. He has created two Frank Zappa Mail stamps icons using a mail stamp icon template posted a while ago on Hawk Wings:

Changing Mail.app’s Dock icon is easy.

I’ve added them to the Hawk Wings Alternative Mail Stamps Icon list, which now contains 331 different icons. Gag me with a spoon.mail.app, apple mail, icons, dock icon, hack, tips, UK, Royal Mail, USA, stars and stripes

USA and UK Mail Stamp Icons

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

UsamailstampSome time ago Antony Ellam created a set of UK mail stamps for Mail.app. They disappeared, but now they are back.

Antony has put them up on his blog.

The set features first and second class stamps, and the gold one. He has two sets, one “flat” and another which looks more shiny and “Aqua-like”:

Ukmailstamps

He has created one based on the stars and stripes and another set of special issue stamps (some are included in the screenshot above).

Also listed in Antony’s post are links to some original Photoshop files which could serve as templates for people keen to roll their own Mail stamp icons.

Most are available as ICNS files, but some only as PNG images. These you will need to convert using a tool like the excellent and free img2icns utility.

Changing Mail.app’s Dock icon is easy.

I’ve added them back into the Hawk Wings Alternative Mail Stamps Icon list, which now contains 328 329 different icons. Enjoy.

FirstClassRoyalMailbrown.jpgUPDATE: Alex Lawrence emails to send a Royal Mail stamp icon that he has used for many years.

He doesn’t know who made it nor whose intellectual property I am potentially infringing by posting it, but it seems a shame not to make it available.

If you know to whom credit is due, let me know.

In the meantime, you can download it from Hawk Wings, where it’s stored until its rightful owner emerges.mail.app, apple mail, icons, dock icon, hack, tips, UK, Royal Mail, USA, stars and stripes

USA gets better but still top spam source

Saturday, April 22nd, 2006

email_screenAnti-virus and anti-spam company Sophos has released its latest spam report , which covers the origin and replaying of spam for the first quarter of 2006.

According to the report, the USA accounted for over half of all spam sent to the world two years ago, but now it sends less than a quarter. The improvement is attributed to the CAN-SPAM Act and to successful US prosecutions of spammers.

Increasing amounts of spam sent from other parts of the world also help the USA’s percentage of the total to fall. Europe in particular has seen substantial increases.

Asia remains the king of spam-relaying.

You can read a summary of the report with graphs on the Sophos web site.email, spam, USA, CAN-SPAM, Europe
