Craig Harper emails to say that the Ultimate Aussie Blogroll (as seen in the sidebar of his site or in the screenshot here), based on Technorati rankings, now lists Hawk Wings as the fifth highest-ranked Australian blog.

Of course, Technorati may no longer be the power in the land that it once was, and so may have become an unreliable guide, but it’s still nice to think that “a niche in a niche market” (mail.app on Mac OS X) site could rate so well.

It almost makes up for people who feel free to rip off the Hawk Wings Plug-in and Add-on list and run it on their own web site without attribution. (But not any more!)

Or others who are content to rip off just the occasional post and run that as their own.

Needless to say, Hawk Wings would still rank 25,480,321th on Technorati (where it began) without people like you who read, post comments and improve it. So all of this is really a round-about way of saying thanks for coming.

Tim Berners-Lee often points out that the information explosion of the Internet is useless unless you know how to find, process and evaluate the information as well.

The quantity of information is less important than the tools and skills to sift and use it well.

Bloglight is a search app that helps you sift the endless flow of the blogosphere. It searches Google BlogSearch, IceRocket, Feedster and Technorati in one hit and returns results sorted by relevance or date.

Say you wanted to find some good stuff on Mail.app and plugins. Enter those terms into bloglight and it returns nicely formatted results like this:

Arrow icons allow you to go quickly to the post or blog you want. The small number on the right of the titlebar for each entry tells you how many sources reference the post. If you find a good feed, you can easily add it to your RSS reader.

Bloglight is shareware (USD 13.95). A demo limited to 30 searches can be downloaded from the developer’s web site.

It’s been five weeks since my last self-indulgent “Hawk Wings Stats” post. So another one is perhaps OK.

Yesterday Hawk Wings served its 500,000th page. The number of pages served to Iceland has increased fourfold.

Also, over the last five weeks, Hawk Wings somehow moved up from 90,216 to 51, 816 in Technorati’s rankings.

A big thanks to you for reading, commenting and for linking. And to Alternative Web Services who hosts Hawk Wings and has generously provided some extra bandwidth to keep the site ticking over. Thanks.

One final stat. Today is my two year “switchaversary”. I still have a crystal-clear memory of the afternoon my PowerBook arrived at work. The weight. The style. The unpacking ritual. The smell. The startup chime. Opening my own copy of Mail.app for the first time.
