Given the recent rather rocky launch of MobileMe, it is no surprise that this week’s list of new and updated technotes from Apple contains a large number of support documents relating to MobileMe.

It is one thing to read the range of complaints in the MobileMe Apple Discussion Group . It’s another thing to get a sense of big problems from the horse’s mouth itself.

Apple’s new Support offerings for MobileMe are listed at the end of this post.

All MobileMe services get a look in, but there is a concentration on Sync issues and how to deal with them.

Some of the items are more useful than others. For example, I didn’t know what the maximum size of a MobileMe email message was until I read that “you can send and receive email messages up to 20 MB in size with your MobileMe Mail account.”

On the other hand, the technote on “How MobileMe filters spam messages” is less useful.

It tells you that

To minimize the impact of spam on MobileMe members, MobileMe employs several methods of detecting spam before it ever reaches your inbox. Spam prevention requires filtering mechanisms that include dynamic lists, trend analysis and content filtering.

However, it continues, “Filtering spam at the server is only part of the equation. You may find it helpful to use your mail application filtering to complement the server filtering.”

The only way to deal with false-positives is to contact MobileMe support:

If you feel that a friendly message was inadvertently deleted, you may want to ask your friend for a follow up email before you contact support, if you notice that multiple messages are being delayed, bounced, or not delivered, you should contact MobileMe Support directly.

Another cracker comes in the technote on viewing Mail.app’s Notes in MobileMe Mail:

Symptoms
If you create a Note with Mail in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, then view the note with MobileMe Mail, the text of the note will appear but the background color of the note will not be yellow.

Additionally, the notes cannot be edited in MobileMe Mail, and may appear to be from an “unspecified-domain” with no “To” address.

Products Affected
Mac OS X 10.5, MobileMe, MobileMe Mail

Resolution
This is expected behavior. For the best experience with Notes, use Mac OS X Mail only.

This document will be updated as more information becomes available.

For the third time in as many weeks, someone whose opinion is worth listening to has given .Mac a proper spanking.

At Tao of Mac, Rui Carmo takes the hatchet to Apple’s online service, and he doesn’t leave much standing after he is finished going through its features one-by-one.

Like previous recent critics (first wave and second wave), Rui is bewildered both by .Mac’s poor value for money and its lack of innovation:

My main point is that .Mac isn’t the benefit it’s touted to be, and that I can come up with a number of enhancements and added features that would make it worthwhile for me to keep my .Mac subscription and push Apple’s online services ahead of the pack where it regards mobility.

It’s not satisfying the geeky end of the Mac user market. It’s not doing too well at the other end either:

On the other hand, if Apple thinks their target market for .Mac is the I-don’t-want-to-understand-computers folk, they may be falling quite short of the mark – because it doesn’t work consistently right even for those people (if you’ve never had issues with .Mac, you’re very lucky).

Rui’s writing is dense and value-packed. I sometimes come away with my head spinning but I’m always glad I took the trouble. Try it yourself. <tags>mail.app, apple mail, .Mac, dotmac, idisk, sync, ichat, apple, usability, innovation, ouch!</tags>

MySync is an app that provides all the benefits of .Mac synchronisation without the need to have a .Mac account. It allows you to sync your Bookmarks, Calendars, Contacts, Mail Accounts, Rules, Signatures, and Smart Mailboxes between all the Macs connected on a single local area network.

I like the look of this.

MySync is an app that provides all the benefits of <tag>.Mac</tag> <tag>synchronisation</tag> without the need to have a .Mac account.

It allows you to sync your <tag>Bookmarks</tag>, <tag>Calendars</tag>, <tag>Contacts</tag>, Mail Accounts, <tag>Rules</tag>, <tag>Signatures</tag>, and Smart <tag>Mailboxes</tag> between Macs connected on a single local area network.

It uses the Apple <tag>Sync</tag> engine built-in to Tiger (so requires 10.4+) and configures one computer as the master and the rest as slaves.

The main window shows how it works:

Be default it will only sync with other computers on the network running under the same short user name, although there is an option to “masquerade” as another user if required.

Of course, MySync’s features do not replace all the benefits of a .Mac account. MySync’s developer provides a comparison of the two on its web site:
.

I can read this. If you can’t, a larger table can be found on the developer’s web site.

MySync is currently in public beta, offering time-limited licences for the beta trial.

You can download the beta from the developer’s web site.Similar Posts:

Set-up is ?ɬºber-easy. If you are using Mac OS 10.3 or better, the Macs will simply find each other.

You can choose to share only certain groups, which means work-related contacts can be shared, but private contacts kept private. You can also password-protect the sharing, restricting who on the network can — and who can’t — get access.

Address-o-sync is donation-ware for individuals, but shareware for companies, and is available from the developer’s web site.Similar Posts:

Apple has updated a tech note about disabled rules.

Apple has updated a tech note about disabled rules following the release of 10.4.3.

It now reads (in part):

If you’re using Mac OS X 10.4.3 and use .Mac to sync information, any Mail rules that you created before installing Mac OS X 10.4.3 will be disabled.

It then explains how to recreate any disabled rules by duplicating them.

It’s a bit confusing. My rules all look fine after the update. The title of the tech note says that the rules “may be disabled”; the content of the note now suggests that they “will be disabled”.

They can’t both be right.

UPDATE: Although my rules look fine, are active and work through my Mail Act-on shortcuts without any problem, some people report problems in the comments to this entry. (I think I’ve worked out why I’m not having problems and why they are, and it’s got nothing to do with .Mac synchronization).<tags>10.4.3, rules, sync, update, apple tech note, mail.app, apple mail</tags>Similar Posts:
