StickyBrain is no more

Sunday, July 9th, 2006

stickybrain100pxChronos announced in an email today to registered users that StickyBrain has been discontinued and will be replaced by another of the company’s information management apps, SOHO Notes.

SOHO Notes is built from the same code base as StickyBrain but features three additional functions:

  • SOHO Notes can synchronize notes between multiple computers using a .Mac account.
  • SOHO Notes can access multiple note databases simultaneously.
  • SOHO Notes is multi-user capable which means users can share notes with others over a network using the product’s client/server technology.

The two apps cost the same (USD 39.99) and Chronos is offering free transition to existing StickyBrain users.

According to the Vice President of Sales at Chronos, Jerry Halls, the move streamlines the company’s software catalogue:

SOHO Notes is like a big brother to StickyBrain—it does everything StickyBrain does plus more. In order to simplify our product line and bring more focus to our SOHO Series of products, we feel that now is a good time to move our users from StickyBrain to the more powerful SOHO Notes.

Earlier this year Hawk Wings was very impressed with Yojimbo, Bare Bones’ new information manager, and switched from StickyBrain.

It then watched with interest as Chronos appeared to incorporate many of Yojimbo’s features in a subsequent release of StickyBrain.

As a result of today’s change, Chronos now offers an information manager at almost the same price as Yojimbo, but with stronger multi-user and network features. yojimbo, stickybrain, information management, productivity, PIM, notes, snippets

RapidoWrite: Accelerate your typing

Monday, June 5th, 2006

rapidowriteRapidoWrite is a snippet manager like TextExpander.

It allows you to store text strings that you type repeatedly and to insert them into your typing with ease and speed. I find that these apps make me much more productive in Mail.app and elsewhere.

The Preferences set-up will be familiar to users of Text(Ex)pander:

rapidowrite_prefs

Through it, you enter your frequent text strings and an abbreviation to identify them.

When you are typing, a pop-up window appears when the app’s input manager recognises a matching keystroke combination:

rapidowrite_action

If you have several snippet with abbreviations that begin with the same keystrokes (as above) it offers you all the options.

Its great advantage over TextExpander is its cost—it’s free.

However, unlike TextExpander it only does text. Support for images is planned for a future release, the developer says, but for the moment TextExpander has the edge.

RapidoWrite is freeware and is available from the developer’s web site .mail.app, apple mail, snippets, textexpander, text strings, typing acceleration, productivity

TextExpander: Textpander makes good

Tuesday, May 23rd, 2006

textexpander100pxPeter Maurer’s text snippet manager, Textpander, is my third favourite productivity app after Quicksilver and Spell Catcher X .

I save enormous amounts of time by using it to store my various email signatures (and much more).

Peter sold the app to SmileOnMyMac a few weeks ago where it has now reappeared officially as TextExpander .

The new version (1.3) has gained some new features. You can now reference other snippets as variables via “%snippet:[abbreviation]%” and create snippets directly from selected text by means of the TextExpander Service. An initial Japanese localisation has also been added.

TextExpander is shareware (USD 29.95). SmileOnMyMac is offering free registration to everyone who gave money when the app was donation-ware. If you did, you should be getting an email containing the registration key for the new version.

UPDATE: See how TextExpander ranks among the five apps that most boost my productivity in a post on X Factor .textpander, textexpander, snippets, productivity, helpful apps

Textpander 1.2.2

Friday, January 20th, 2006

TextpanderTextpander is an app that saves time and effort by storing frequently typed text (or snippets), which you can then insert as you type with a user-defined abbreviation.

The developer has released it recompiled as a universal binary, ready to run on the new Intel Macs.

Textpander is donation-ware and is available from the developer’s web site.

(Witch, a neat window switching utility, has also been released as a universal binary).

Textpander gets an update

Saturday, October 29th, 2005

textpanderTextpander has been updated with some nifty new features.

This time-saving (and finger-saving) utility stores snippets of text and images that you can insert in your typing with user-defined shortcuts. It’s one of my favorite OS X add-ons and saves me lots of time in Apple Mail and elsewhere.

The updated version features as new variable (%clipboard) allowing you to insert whatever is in the Clipboard into your snippets. Sweet.

It now imports snippets from other apps better and works more smoothly with Nisus Writer nlang files. Panther users will be pleased to learn that it now works in 10.3.9 as well. The version also adds French and German localizations.

You can get the updated version from the developer’s web site.
