Firefox and the Digg effect

Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

digg_iconA few days ago, the Hawk Wings list of 254 different stamp icons for Mail.app was dugg.

Before the digg, Mint tells me that 58% of visitors to Hawk Wings use Safari and 27% Firefox.

After the digg—and a fair bit of traffic—those figures are 47% and 37%.

I don’t know what it means, but it’s interesting. Perhaps Firefox users are more social.hawkwings, safari, firefox, digg, what does it all mean?

Gcal.app: Distraction-free Google Calendar WebKit client

Tuesday, June 20th, 2006

GcalappInspired partly by Michael McCracken’s distraction-free, dedicated WebKit browser for Gmail, Chip Cuccio has written one for Google calendar.

It does just what Michael’s does for Gmail, giving you a view of your Google calendar without the toolbars and other things that distract you from your work.

Chip has posted the app, the source code and a screenshot on his web site .

Quick work too, considering recent news.ical, gcal, Google calendar, webkit, productivity, safari, gmail

Google Calendar now supports Safari

Sunday, June 18th, 2006

googlecalendar140pxThe Google Calendar Welcome Page now notes that Safari is an offically supported browser.

It loads without any problems and all the drag ‘n’ drop and other slick features seem to work fine.

One thing I did notice: clashing events are rendered less clearly in Safari, where they lack the immediate visual clue of an overlap:

Add a “Gmail this” bookmarklet to your web browser

Saturday, May 20th, 2006

GmailThis browser bookmarklet, “Gmail This“, creates a new Gmail message containing the URL of the web page you are viewing.

Just drag it to your Bookmarks Bar (Safari/Camino) or Command-click on it and select “Bookmark this link…” (Firefox).

That’s it.

Better formatting of web content in Mail.app

Tuesday, April 18th, 2006

safari100pxDave Proffer sends in the following clever tip to produce better results when emailing the contents of a web page from Safari:

openquotationmarksI sometimes use Safari’s ‘Mail contents of this page’ option to quickly get a idea to someone.

Some web pages have a print ‘reformatter’ link that creates a simpler format HTML page that often emails and reads well as a HTML email message. So prior to using Safari’s ‘Mail content..’ option on these pages, I use this print ‘reformatter’ first. That is all fine and good.

However for web pages that do not have a print link or web pages that still have other stuff in frames and CSS sections at the top, left and right of the core content you are trying to get the other person to read, I have found the following simple extra step is helpful to reformat the body of the resulting HTML mail message.

In this case, after Safari’s ‘Mail content..’ opens up a new mail message, simply start a ‘Print’ on the new message. I’ve found that the Web Kit’s (I’m guessing) ‘smart’ print logic kicks in and tries to make a decision on what web content is the primary thing you are trying to print and keeps that at the front and then moves all the other frames and sections down sequentially behind this main idea.

At this point, cancel the ‘Print’. Do a quick once over on the message to see if OS X made some good choices. closequotationmarksThen address your message (and edit or annotate it) and send.

NetNewsWire gets Mail.app integration

Tuesday, March 21st, 2006

netnewswire100pxA new public beta of NetNewsWire, the RSS reader, is available from Newsgator, the app’s new home.

It has lots of new features and some tweaks to its interface and performance. Hawk Wings’ readers will be especially interested to hear of its tighter integration with Mail.app.

Rather like Safari, two new commands in the File menu offer options for emailing the contents of the news item and for emailing a link to the news item or page.

The email-contents command requires Apple Mail, although the email link command should work equally well with Thunderbird, Entourage and other email clients.

Nice one, Brent.
