Given the recent rather rocky launch of MobileMe, it is no surprise that this week’s list of new and updated technotes from Apple contains a large number of support documents relating to MobileMe.

It is one thing to read the range of complaints in the MobileMe Apple Discussion Group . It’s another thing to get a sense of big problems from the horse’s mouth itself.

Apple’s new Support offerings for MobileMe are listed at the end of this post.

All MobileMe services get a look in, but there is a concentration on Sync issues and how to deal with them.

Some of the items are more useful than others. For example, I didn’t know what the maximum size of a MobileMe email message was until I read that “you can send and receive email messages up to 20 MB in size with your MobileMe Mail account.”

On the other hand, the technote on “How MobileMe filters spam messages” is less useful.

It tells you that

To minimize the impact of spam on MobileMe members, MobileMe employs several methods of detecting spam before it ever reaches your inbox. Spam prevention requires filtering mechanisms that include dynamic lists, trend analysis and content filtering.

However, it continues, “Filtering spam at the server is only part of the equation. You may find it helpful to use your mail application filtering to complement the server filtering.”

The only way to deal with false-positives is to contact MobileMe support:

If you feel that a friendly message was inadvertently deleted, you may want to ask your friend for a follow up email before you contact support, if you notice that multiple messages are being delayed, bounced, or not delivered, you should contact MobileMe Support directly.

Another cracker comes in the technote on viewing Mail.app’s Notes in MobileMe Mail:

Symptoms
If you create a Note with Mail in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, then view the note with MobileMe Mail, the text of the note will appear but the background color of the note will not be yellow.

Additionally, the notes cannot be edited in MobileMe Mail, and may appear to be from an “unspecified-domain” with no “To” address.

Products Affected
Mac OS X 10.5, MobileMe, MobileMe Mail

Resolution
This is expected behavior. For the best experience with Notes, use Mac OS X Mail only.

This document will be updated as more information becomes available.

While the release itself contains no new features, only general stability improvements and security fixes (full list ), the release notes mention a number of bugs and known issues, some of which affect Mac users in particular.

Four of the problems are described as known issues, the last of which may affect Intel Mac users:

If after you run the Thunderbird 1.5.0.8 installer, the extension compatibility and update wizard does not appear, go to the Extension Manager and manually check for updates.

If the Extension Compatibility and Update wizard appears but does not complete, first try to focus some other window and return focus to the wizard. If that does not correct the problem, hit Cancel and go to the Extension Manager and manually check for updates.

If the Extension Compatibility and Update wizard downloads and installs extension updates but those updates are not applied, open the Extension Manager and manually check for updates.

On Intel-based Macintosh computers, PowerPC-only binary extensions do not work unless users upgrade to an Intel-native or Universal version or turn on Rosetta. To turn on Rosetta, click on the Thunderbird icon, click “Get Info” and then check the “Run Under Rosetta” box.

Two more potential Mac-specific issues are detailed in the notes:

If you are running Thunderbird 1.5 or Thunderbird 1.5.0.2 on Macintosh computers with Intel Core processors under Rosetta, you will get upgraded to a PowerPC-only, Thunderbird 1.5.0.8 product via the automated update system. You will need to download the Thunderbird 1.5.0.8 Universal Binary build from www.mozilla.com to take advantage of the native support for Intel-based Macintosh computers.

There is no Talkback on Intel-based Macs when running natively or under Rosetta. The Apple Crash report program should launch in the event of application crashes.

Although my own experience of the 10.4.7 update and Mail.app has been completely trouble-free, not everyone has been so lucky. MacUser carries a good summary of some general problems.

MacInTouch has a collection of readers’ reports about problems following the recent update. Almost all of them mention Mail. The posters either have problems or are just disillusioned like this one:

It’s been how many years now, that Mail has been out? How many updates to the OS, and still, *still* Apple has not fixed the problem that Mail has wrt long URIs: It breaks them in such a way that only Mail seems to be able to handle. Users of other Mail software are unable to click on the resulting links.

With the 10.4.7 update, they’ve certainly addressed some bugs in Mail, but this is STILL not one of them. I think the argument can be made that it’s more serious than some of the ones they have fixed.

I’ve reported this bug several times to Apple, as have my colleagues, but maybe we need a more public rant.

I don’t think that Apple will “fix” this problem. The “delsp=yes” flag that triggers this behaviour (read more about it in an earlier Hawk Wings post) is well-documented in the RFC standard.

Apple (I imagine) doesn’t think this is a bug in Mail.app. It’s the rest of the world that lags behind, and we Mail users must wait for other email clients to catch up.

We just have to take the taunts of our non-Mail-using buddies on the nose, or use one workaround or another in the meantime.<tags>mail.app, apple mail, 10.4.7, problems, bugs, frustrations, broken URLs, delsp=yes, RFC</tags>Similar Posts:

A while ago, a Hawk Wings reader emailed me, asking for advice (often risky; not generally recommended).

He was having a problem with attachments:

When I use Apple Mail to upload an attachment, the recipients are unable to receive it. Particularly, their mail application will display an attachment icon, but there will be no attachment in their mailbox. This was never a problem with Entourage, and I don’t want to have to return to using that program. I’m just wondering if you have ever encountered this as an issue.

Annoying. Having read or heard somewhere that Outlook users in particular have this problem with attachment in Mail.app generated emails and that it is a function of the odd way in which Mail does HTML (“Rich Text”), I advised him to switch to plain text as the default Composing format (Preferences > Composing > Message Format).

That fixed the problem. Something to bear in mind if the same thing should happen to your recipients.<tags>attachments, mail.app, apple mail, outlook, problems, tips</tags>Similar Posts:

According to user reports, it looks like Gmail Notifier is not currently reporting new mail in Gmail accounts.

According to some user reports , it looks like Gmail Notifier is no longer correctly reporting new mail in Gmail accounts.

Neither the old version or the recently updated one are working for me.

If notification is important to you, it might be worth switching to GmailStatus (which is working fine) until the problem is sorted out.

UPDATE: The crisis must be over. Gmail Notifier just sputtered into life again.<tags>gmail, notification, email, problems</tags>Similar Posts:

He points out a number of problems in design and operation with its text fields, contextual menus and information drawer.

I’ve been using iCal for two years now (since switching) and already I’ve become harden to these problems — I unconsciously work around them, I think it’s normal, I don’t see them at all anymore, if I ever did.
