Hawk Wings reader Jon Yates emails to ask, “Any idea how to print a list of all your to do headings in OSX Leopard mail.app?”

Good question! I don’t think you can. At least, I can’t work it out (which may not be the same thing).

Luckily because of the new system-wide task database in Leopard, your choices are not restricted to Mail.

You can, of course, do it in iCal. But it takes a lot of stuffing around with the options in the Print dialog to whittle things down to a lean, tasks-only list. And then more clicking to get it to print out as, for example, a PDF.

But in the end you can get there:

You could do it in a GTD app like OmniFocus or Things, but that seems like a hammer and walnut solution for the problem. Jon just want to email a list of tasks.

Fortunately, a quicker, more efficient and free solution is not far away. The task management widget DoBeDo (which also does a lot of other things — see earlier Hawk Wings post) has a print option that can quick spit out a list of tasks in Preview as a PDF or to a specified printer.

After you set the option on the back of the widget, it is a one step operation (mouse-click or ⌘P), and produces a nice list:

It also has a one-click option (⌘E) to send the list to an email address that you specify.

DoBeDo has recently been updated, and now features a “Last Day of the Month” scheduling option and treats “procrastinated” tasks without a due date as due today.

It also has more skins that the last time I looked (selection below):

The Apple Calendar skin looks nice next to the other black widgets in Dashboard:

DoBeDo is freeware. It is available along with detailed documentation of its options and keyboard shortcuts from the developer’s web site . <tags>mail.app, apple mail, tasks, todos, ical, printing, lists, dobedo, widget, pdf, productivity, tips, leopard</tags>Similar Posts:

Well, two ways really. He covers using Address Book’s own built-in printing option, first through the included settings and then using instructions in a tip in the Apple Discussions forum.

He also suggests using the freeware Palm Desktop for Mac software , which offers more extensive options that are easier to configure than the Apple Discussions tip.

You can add one more option by quickly scanning the Address Book entries in the Hawk Wings Plugin and Addon List.

Address Book Reports (see an earlier Hawk Wings post ) offers many more options than the features built-in to Address Book.

It is shareware (USD 15) but will be money well spent for people with unusual day planners or boutique needs or for people who simply like to have all the options at their finger-tips.<tags>address book, day planner, filofax, franklin, contacts, printing, hipster, not apple mail, productivity</tags>Similar Posts:

Ivan points out that Address Book contains a “Pocket Address Book” printing format.

If you are looking for greater flexibility, it is worth remembering another helpful app that expands your options.

Address Book Reports offers a variety of templates that include Card and Phonebook sizes and well as allowing for custom print-outs (Hipster contact lists, anyone?).

It also does envelopes and labels, and all of that for only USD 15. You can get it from the developer’s web site .

Now suddenly it’s at 1.4! In the meantime, it has got smarter about printing Home or Work addresses by default and the current profile correctly remembers the settings you last used each time you open it.

Several printing bugs have been ironed out and other minor improvements implemented.

The finished product looks as good as ever:

Apple has revised its technote on "printing Mail messages, wrapping text, and font sizing".

Apple has revised its technote on “printing Mail messages, wrapping text, and font sizing”.

The technote describes the three options available when printing Mail.app messages (just choose “Print” from the File menu, then change the third pop-up menu’s choice from “Copies & Pages” to “Mail”):

In short, the three options are:

Scale message to fit: This option prints the message exactly as it is displayed on the screen, without re-wrapping. If the message is wider than the paper size, the message is resized to fit.

Rewrap message to fit: This keeps the specified font size of the message and rewraps the text to fit the paper size, producing a printout that is some cases looks different to the screen view. The printout may appear smaller than its looks on the screen.

Keep the same apparent font size: Here Mail tries to strike a balance between screen and print points per inch and may rewrap the printout if needed. The technote suggest that “if you’re not sure which option might be best for you, try this one first.”

It’s also worth noting that this print option it “sticky” and your choice is retained until you change it again.<tags> apple technote, mail.app, apple mail, printing, font size, rewrapping, tips</tags> Similar Posts:
