What did you say? I’ve got a blog?

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

GadentalbotAfter taking a little break from Hawk Wings due to a rush of Real Life, I now find myself in the eye of the storm.

So I am going to post some stuff.

Thanks to all the people who emailed wondering if I had fallen under a bus or been burnt at the stake. It’s nice to be missed. hawkwings, mail.app. apple mail, personal, hibernation

Belated Big Beautiful Blogless Beach Break

Beach 2007

The opportunity has come up, due to a miraculous absence of work, church or wider family commitments, to make a break for the beach house. We’re taking it.

I’ll be back in just over a week.

I hope that Hawk Wings readers have a happy, relaxing and joyful Easter. I know that I will:

Hello. I’m back again.

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

More apologies for the longest non-holiday break in the history of Hawk Wings.

I’m having a bugger of a time getting on top of my new job.

And now, there’s an additional complication. While I was distracted and not paying attention, someone made me Stewart Lecturer in Theology in the College’s Theological School as well.

So now I need to dress better, look holy and smart at the same time, teach Greek with verve and wit, and spend more time with students, supervising masters theses and mentoring.

I’ve resigned from some of my (well-paid, enjoyable but draining) freelancing work, so that I can keep Hawk Wings running.

Fingers crossed.mail.app, apple mail, personal, holy and smart, trinity college theological school, freelancing, keeping all the balls in the air

Pause

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

KidwritingSorry for the hiatus.

I have been writing for money. But that sordid prostitution of my priceless gifts is over, at least for another month.

Normal service resumes.

Here’s a thought…. If you like Hawk Wings and you benefit from the things that appear here, you could make a donation. Then I wouldn’t have to sell myself on the street. (Well, not as often anyway.)

A few shekels will do. I’m not proud. Obviously.

Hawk Wings blogger gets promoted, de-fellowed

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

ManPaperstakFor the last eighteen months I have had a delightfully relaxed life, employed only part-time as a research fellow. So I’ve been able to do freelancing as an IT journalist and to run Hawk Wings, to “top and tail” the day with the kids, read books and get my Latin back into shape.

But a few days ago, the college where I work made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.

As a result, from 1 January onwards, I’ll be working full-time. I still get to teach Greek and supervise research students (which is nice), but will also get to enjoy the Gordian knot (Wikipedia ) of administrative and higher education policy duties appropriate to a “Research and Executive Officer”.

It’s too early to say what this means for Hawk Wings. I have high hopes.

At the very least, it will give me a chance really to put my “Getting Things Done with Mail.app” system through the wringer.

And I’ll be able to do it fast. The job comes with a sweetner—the promise of a spanking brand new Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro after Leopard is released.mail.app, apple mac, productivity, personal, life change, getting things done, GTD

Hawk Wings serves 1,000,000 pages. Thanks.

Monday, November 6th, 2006

CelebrationThis afternoon a parcel arrived from Springfield, Virginia packed full of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Hershey S’mores and something new to me, Nestle Butterfingers.

So, as I am feeling extra well-disposed to the USA tonight, it’s a pleasure to thank Hawk Wings’ many American vistors (more than nine out of ten Hawk Wings pages go to the United States) for a little Hawk Wings’ milestone.

This morning while I was invigilating a Greek exam, Hawk Wings served its millionth page since I worked out how to install mint . Small beer by some standards, but amazing to me. w00t!

Thanks for visiting. I hope that you enjoy the site as much as I do.

And thanks, too, to the people at TextDrive , “a hosting company run by and for people who love publishing on the web”, who have saved me from myself on a number of occasions.

Of course, if you have enjoyed Hawk Wings a lot and benefited from some of the stuff here, you can always make a donation towards the next million pages.

Options include the PayPal button on the blog’s front page or since you would be doing me a favour, I can bring the button to you:

There and back again

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

DonquihoteAnother long silence. But I’m not dead. I’ve been questing and tarrying in the land of Vista , undergoing trials by ordeal and slaying dragons.

Along the way I became more convinced than ever that Windows Mail is not one of the seven wonders of the world and that switching to Macs in 2004 was one of my top five life decisions.

It’s always fun to go on adventures but, golly, it’s good to be home again.

I don’t think it can be true that travel always broadens the mind.personal, mail.app, apple mail, windows vista rc2, bloody bloody boot camp, adventures
