Huzzah! Hawk Wings serves 5 million pages

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

I’m sorry for the lapse in taste, but I can’t help myself.

This morning at 6.05 am, Hawk Wings served its 5 millionth page to the world.

At least, that’s the total Mint has cranked up since I installed it in July 2006:

So, 3,425 page impressions a day on average, every day for four years. Thanks to everyone who has dropped by, especially to those loyal readers who kept me in their RSS feeds despite repeated long periods of inactivity.

Teary-eyed, as I stand before this milestone, I am grateful to several luminaries in the blogosphere who encouraged me to continue throughout the long stretch when the numbers were not so promising. *sniff*

Thanks too to the aggregators who picked up my posts. Sweet!

Blogging; it’s cheaper than therapy.

P.S. Obviously, this is small beer in the global scheme of things, but it is _my_ beer ;-)

Hawk Wings gets iPhone-friendly

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

iphoneHawk Wings looks as good on an iPhone as it does on a Mac.

Thanks to the magic of WordPress plugin WPtouch Pro , you can now use your iPhone to read, browse and search Hawk Wings with ease.

The new layout also works with Palm, Android, Blackberry and other smart phones.

You can access the search function via the icon in the top righthand corner of the title bar.

There you will find options to search the site, or browse it by tag, keyword and category.

The new layout also helps Hawk Wings to look nice when accessed from an iPhone RSS reader app like Reeder . Which is nice.

Now all Hawk Wings needs is some new content to read!

The Long Sleep

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Waking upSo, I’m thinking about starting Hawk Wings up again.

It’s been a while. I’ve missed it. I wonder, after all this time, if anyone else is still missing it too.

At first, I’ll be busy on the back end. While I’ve been gone WordPress has jumped from 2.5 to 2.8. There are 924 comments backed up in the moderation queue.

But I’ll quietly plug away and posts will soon be appearing again.

I”m looking forward to it.personal, hawkwings, hawk wings, sleeper arise

Winter Beach Holiday

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

The marking is all done, the students are spread to the four winds for semester break, school holidays are upon us.

Thanne longen folk to goon on pilgrimages
And palmeres for to seken straunge strondes
To ferne halwes, kowthe in sondry londes;

(Then people long to go on pilgrimages
and pilgrims to seek strange shores
far-off shrines, known in sundry lands;)

In short, we are off to the beach house for the winter break, as Geoffrey Chaucer recommends.

Log fires, walks on the windy beach, books, Shiraz, S’mores, the complete boxed set of West Wing DVDs.

No broadband.

See you again in ten days or so. not mail.app, not apple mail, personal, beach, real life

WordPress update not as smooth as hoped

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

GrumpysmileyLast night I updated Hawk Wings to WordPress 2.3.2.

It didn’t go as smoothly as I had hoped.

Some text got munged up and some other bits and pieces are broken.

I will work it all out in the end, but apologies for the mess in the meantime.personal, apple mail, not apple mail, mail.app, russin’ frussin’ plugins

Getting back into the groove

Sunday, November 4th, 2007

AwaytoolongIt’s been too long a break, but I am now slowly getting back into the blogging groove.

Of course, it’s an exciting time to be back. With Leopard, you never quite know — alarms in iCal, admin privileges, .Mac syncing — everything’s an adventure!

Thanks to all those who commented that it’s nice to have Hawk Wings back.

Thanks too to Akismet which caught 53,000 comment spams while I was away. Nonetheless, over 630 comments spams slipped through into the comment moderation queue. I deleted them all, and I am sorry if your unapproved comment died with them.

Moving house…

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Leemingplace We are moving house today.

The telephone company has cutting-edge, user-focussed customer service, so we can’t get a phone line connected until 12 July, with broadband following after that.

My Treo 680 can do many things, but I don’t how to use it to post on Hawk Wings, so I am just letting you know that nothing will appear for a bit.

Once house buying, selling and moving, and job excitement is over, perhaps I’ll get a clear run at blogging again.personal, not mail.app, not apple mail, real life, treo680
