Frank Zappa Mail stamp icons!

Monday, March 5th, 2007

ZappamailiconstandfirstI’m too young to remember Frank Zappa (Wikipedia ), but funky older people tell me he was very cool.

The names of his children only hint at the depths of his creativity: Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan and Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen.

Duncan Moran thinks Zappa is great too. He has created two Frank Zappa Mail stamps icons using a mail stamp icon template posted a while ago on Hawk Wings:

USA and UK Mail Stamp Icons

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

UsamailstampSome time ago Antony Ellam created a set of UK mail stamps for Mail.app. They disappeared, but now they are back.

Antony has put them up on his blog.

The set features first and second class stamps, and the gold one. He has two sets, one “flat” and another which looks more shiny and “Aqua-like”:

Ukmailstamps

He has created one based on the stars and stripes and another set of special issue stamps (some are included in the screenshot above).

Also listed in Antony’s post are links to some original Photoshop files which could serve as templates for people keen to roll their own Mail stamp icons.

Most are available as ICNS files, but some only as PNG images. These you will need to convert using a tool like the excellent and free img2icns utility.

I’ve added them back into the Hawk Wings Alternative Mail Stamps Icon list, which now contains 328 329 different icons. Enjoy.

FirstClassRoyalMailbrown.jpgUPDATE: Alex Lawrence emails to send a Royal Mail stamp icon that he has used for many years.

He doesn’t know who made it nor whose intellectual property I am potentially infringing by posting it, but it seems a shame not to make it available.

If you know to whom credit is due, let me know.

In the meantime, you can download it from Hawk Wings, where it’s stored until its rightful owner emerges.mail.app, apple mail, icons, dock icon, hack, tips, UK, Royal Mail, USA, stars and stripes

12 female celebrity Mail stamp icons

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

ElishacuthberticonIt’s not quite as attractive (for me) as getting Scully into Mail.app’s Inbox, but it’s close.

A new set of alternative Mail stamp icons posted on deviantART contains images of Adriana Lima, Angelina Jolie, four of Christina Aguilera, C.J. Rogers, Elisha Cuthbert, two Jessica Albas and Tila Tequila (Is that a real person? UPDATE: Oh, my goodness.)

Another icon features a woman doing something with a snake, but I can’t work out what and I am ill-equipped to make a guess:

Hawk Wings Mail stamp icon list tops 300+

Friday, January 12th, 2007

RacymailiconHunting around on DeviantART has turned up another ten icons.

The first is slightly racy, and an extra pleasure to feature as the creator used a previous Hawk Wings post (“Roll your own Mail stamp icon“) to make it.

“Sub-pop” says that the photo he used is called “chrome disguise”. Download it from DeviantART.

Another nine assorted mail stamp icons were posted by ZorgZ:

Five black and white Bob Dylan mail icons

Wednesday, December 6th, 2006

BobdylanstandfirstA quick cruise through deviantART tonight produced two new collections of mail icons.

The first is by far the better find.

This set of five black and white Bob Dylan Mail stamp icons is very cool. They come from a range of periods in the great man’s music wide enough to satisfy any fan:

Bobdylanicons

I also came across a collection of six traditional letter and envelope icons that are perfect for that “Ye Olde Worlde” look:

Yeoldemaile

(If you—like me—carry the secret shame of teenage years immersed in Dungeons and Dragons, you might like to go the full hog and use scrolls and tomes for your retro look. Or maybe not.)

These mail stamps are PNG image files not icons. You will need to convert them using a tool like the excellent and free img2icns utility.

I’ve added both sets to the Hawk Wings Alternative Mail Stamps Icons list, which now contains 292 different icons. mail.app, apple mail, icons, dock icon, hack, bob dylan, ye olde worlde, tips

DockStar 1.1: A fistful of notification badges

Wednesday, January 25th, 2006

dockstarDockStar is a plugin that allows you to add up to four additional notification badges to Mail.app‘s Dock icon for specific accounts and mailboxes.

An updated version has been released. It has been recompiled as a universal binary and adds several welcome new features.

The notification badges now count emails in subfolders (nested mailboxes). You now have the option to set the opacity of the badges and a new Aqua lozenge-shaped badge has been added.

In addition, DockStar now has a “count all” option, allowing DockStar to display the total number of unread emails in all mailboxes.

Most welcome of all, perhaps, this new version (1.1) resets the demo period, allowing a new trial for users whose previous trial period has expired.

DockStar is shareware (USD 8) and a demo of the updated version is available from the developer’s web site.
