YABI: A smarter birthday calendar for iCal

YABI (“Yet Another Birthday Importer”) is an
iCal utility that aims to improve on the app’s built-in birthday calendar by making it smarter and more feature-rich.

It can import birthdays and anniversaries, display a person’s age in the title of the event it creates (handy!), and lets you add the lot to the calendar of your choice.

The app’s main window lets you select which of your contacts to include:

Click the Start button and it’s all done for you.

YABI’s preference pane, a nice slide-out drawer, allows other options to be set.

It can add a contact’s URL to the event, set the event to be all-day and lets you decide how many years of repeats to create.

You can also nominate how the name should be displayed and whether or not to add the contact’s age.

The Notification pane will either set no alert or use a configurable iCal message to let you know. I like to get emails for my alerts, but perhaps that being picky.

YABI is a universal binary and a beta. It is free at the moment, although may become shareware when the app is formally released.

You can get it from the developer’s web site (scroll down past NetLocation X).

Address Book Dates is a new plugin for Address Book that adds information about a contact’s star sign and age to Address Book’s birthday field.

It also offers quick iCal link to other dates like anniversaries.

Clicking on a contact’s birthday label brings up a contextual menu containing the information.

Unfortunately, the iCal birthday link takes you to the actual day on which the contact was born (an unlikely date to schedule a candle-lit dinner), not to the next occurrence of that date.

Dates to iCal is an app that syncs birthdays and anniversaries in your Address Book to iCal, adding them as alarmed events to a separate calendar.

A new version released today offers improvements to the way it handles Unicode support and fixes a bug in the localised date/time preference.

Plugins and Addons

Two things were added to the Hawk Wings Plug-in and Add-on List this week.

To Do X (a richly featured To Do list app) was added to the helpful apps / Miscellaneous section.

Dates to iCal (sync birthdays and other dates from Address Book to iCal) was added to the iCal section.

Back-end

I finally nailed the problem with the Live Comments Preview plugin.

It was something I don’t really understand to do with the way my webhost’s Apache server handles requests for gzipped files. Anyway, it is restored now and in more sophisticated form (thanks to Daniel Jalkut. Read his Red Sweater Blog — as I do — for pleasure and profit). Dates to iCal is an app that syncs birthdays and anniversaries in your Address Book to iCal, adding them as alarmed events to a separate calendar.

You can also add other customized Address Book date items to iCal and even add birthdays for people for whom you don’t have a separate Address Book card.

The interface windows demonstrates most of the app’s options:

You can set the kind of alarm that iCal will provide (email works best for me) and choose the advanced notice you need.

After importing the events are fully-editable so that you can customize them or add notes.
