Four months ago, Nick Kreeger announced the first release of Correo, a new open source email client for Mac — “Mac essence, Gecko powered” — that “blends technology from two popular Mozilla projects, Camino and Thunderbird, to create a polished native Macintosh application”.

The second public beta has just been released. Correo 0.2 adds several nice new features: Keychain support, Address Book integration, the ability to open messages in a separate window, attachment support, better message list support for IMAP accounts and a collapsable message header and attachment view.

Although Nick readily admits it is a work in progress, the interface already shows Camino’s good looks:

Address Book integration is the big leap forward for usability:

Also nice is the “auto-complete feature” in the To: and Cc: fields:

Underneath the polished exterior, it’s all Thunderbird. The account manager and new account dialogs will be instantly familiar to Thunderbird users.

And the rendering is all Gecko too, as the following ironic screenshot of the new “single window” mode illustrates:

Nick hopes to implement features as the app’s development unfolds, including, plugin capability (to allow development of extensions such as PDA synchronization) and a tabbed window interface.

You can download Correo 0.2 from Nick’s web site and keep up-to-date with new builds through his blog .<tags>thunderbird, not apple mail, not mail.app, camino, mozilla, gecko, email, address book</tags>Similar Posts:

The “Welcome to Correo” email waiting in the inbox describes it as “Mac essence, Gecko powered”.

Extra user interface polish is provided by Jon Hicks , who has provided the icons and other bits and pieces.

And it does look nice:

As Nick admits, it is pretty basic at the moment, although multiple POP and IMAP accounts are supported.

It also features a quick switch between the classic “Mail.app” layout and an Outlook-like “wide-screen” view.

He has big plans for the app though:

There are many planned features for the mail client, including plugin capability (to allow development of extensions such as PDA synchronization), tabbed window interface, address book support, keychain access, and various other to-be-determined features.

A roadmap on the app’s wiki gives an additional sense of where the app is headed.

I sense the end of unqualified “Wildebeest’s butt” wisecracks about Mozilla mail clients.

Correo 0.1 is free and available from Nick’s web site .

[Thanks for the tip-off, Bronson!]<tags>email, thunderbird, camino, gecko, mac osx</tags>Similar Posts:

It’s useful as it is, especially if you use those apps, but the poster also hopes that readers will “glean parts that are relevant to your system/apps or adapt the whole thing or even add to it”.

If you are a beginner at AppleScript (like me) you will be interested to see the section for the del.icio.us bookmarks, which shows how AppleScript can tab through the fields of a web page.

The poster wrote this script after “a few frustrating losses of data”. A warning to us all.<tags>ical, address book, camino, applescript, backup, de.lico.us, bookmarks</tags>Similar Posts:

It’s as easy as pressing ⇧⌘I and then sitting back while Mail.app creates a new message containing the link.

That’s it.

I hesitated about posting this, but sometimes tips aren’t as well known as you might think, like using ⌘] and ⌘[ to cycle through the available HTML, Rich Text and plain text views of an email, or using Gmail-like “Conversation” views in Apple Mail.

If you use some other browser, you will have to make your own arrangements. OminWeb users can use a bookmarklet to send a link, Firefox users can customise their toolbar by adding a “Send Link” button and Camino users can uses ⇧⌘L. <tags>url, safari, camino, firefox, mail.app, apple mail, keyboard shortcuts, gmail, tips, emailing a link</tags>Similar Posts:

Of course, it supports Mail.app, Safari and Firefox. It even supports Eudora and Mailsmith.

A new version released today adds Camino (excellent! ), Shiira and Opera to that list. Thunderbird is now also supported.

It can erase and/or overwrite (not just delete) the following: browser caches, Internet histories, email trash, download caches, your quicktime cache, favicons and cookies.

NetShred X is a universal binary. It’s shareware (USD 19.95) and a demo is available from the developer’s web site . <tags>privacy, email, mail.app, apple mail, thunderbird, camino, security</tags>Similar Posts:

He uses this script to open his Gmail in a distraction-free Camino window:

FreeSMUG has posted a portable build of Thunderbird 1.5 that you can put on a memory stick or any other portable medium. The Mozilla Wiki carries news of progress towards a version of Thunderbird that will run on the new Intel Macs.

Two quick Thunderbird things:

FreeSMUG has posted a <tag>portable</tag> build of Thunderbird 1.5 that you can put on a <tag>memory stick</tag> or any other portable medium.

You will need at least 33 MB of free space, but you can then take your Thunderbird with you (complete with emails and contacts) and use it on any Mac.

The <tag>Mozilla</tag> Wiki carries news of progress towards a version of <tag>Thunderbird</tag> that will run on the new <tag>Intel Mac</tag>s.

The article describes what needs to be done, how they are going to do it, and also links to the latest Intel Mac builds of Thunderbird, <tag>Firefox</tag> and <tag>Camino</tag>.

Now Mozilla users can enjoy portable browsing and email.

It would be very cool to see something similar for <tag>Mail.app</tag>.

You can put your Mail folder on an <tag>iPod</tag> or memory stick and use Apple Mail on whatever Mac you have to hand, but that’s nowhere near as elegant a solution.Similar Posts:
