Greg Welch has tweaked his two Mail plugins, MailRecent and MailFollowUp, to make them Leopard-friendly and to introduce general improvements.

MailRecent (see the earlier Hawk Wings review post) is a quick filing plugin that lives in Mail.app’s Contextual menu. If you are not using Mail Act-on it offers a fast way to file messages into your most frequently used mailboxes, without the hassle of dragging them across to the Mailbox list.

The version released today only runs on Leopard, although a Tiger Mail version is still available on Greg’s web site.

It is now “case-insensitive”, that is, it now lists mailboxes in alphabetical order whether they begin with a capital or lower case letter. Finally, he has added an uninstaller to the disk image, for easy removal.

MailRecent is freeware and is available from Greg’s web site .

MailFollowUp provides a clever tweak to the way Mail handles the carbon copying of emails to a group of recipients.

The new version (1.2), like MailRecent, only runs on Leopard. It too gets an uninstaller and has improved the logic of the replies even more. As Greg puts it, MailFollowUp is now “faster, smoother, and eliminates the occasional addition of the original sender to the To header”

Several localisations have also been improved.

MailFollowUp is also freeware and is available from Greg’s web site .

Andreas Amann has pushed out two quick updates to his Mail Scripts applescript collection.

Now at version 2.8.2, changes include a fix to make the Schedule Delivery script work in 10.4 and 10.5, a workaround to fix a possible error in the Schedule Delivery and Send all Drafts scripts caused by the way Leopard Mail fails to report the account of draft message, and a smarter Export Addresses script, which is no longer stumped if a contact has no work address.

Mail Scripts is freeware (donations not refused) and is available from Andreas’ web site .

Daniel Parnell has released an initial Leopard-friendly version of HTTPMail (1.50), a plugin for Mail.app that fools Hotmail and MSN web-based email accounts into downloading POP emails into Mail.

It basically does the same thing as MacFreePOPs, now also released for Leopard.

The plugin comes in a disk image with an installer and a detailed PDF on how to use it.

He also outlines how to set up a Hotmail account in Mail.app using the plugin. He reminds users that older free Hotmail and MSN accounts will probably work but that newer one may need to be upgraded to Hotmail Plus .

HHTPMail is freeware and available from Daniel’s web site (but not yet from its sourceforge page ).

Just when I thought I had posted enough for today, Andreas Amann releases a updated, Leopard-friendly version of his most excellent Mail Scripts.

Mail Scripts is a collection of eleven applescripts, bundled up in a user-friendly installer, which will remove duplicate messages in Mail.app, create rules from a selected email faster, archive messages, change SMTP servers on the fly, schedule emails for delivery later and much, much more.

They are now compatible with Leopard, although Andreas adds a note of caution about two of the scripts:

When sending messages other than text/plain (i.e., HTML messages and messages with attachments) using either the “Send all Drafts” or “Schedule Delivery” scripts, Mail might fail to actually send the message and present a dialog telling that the message failed to be sent using the server “null” - re-selecting the correct SMTP server will cause the message to be sent as intended. This seems to be a bug in Mail with the application forgetting the correct SMTP server settings which hopefully will be fixed in a future system upgrade.

Mail Scripts is donation-ware and available from Andreas’ web site . No mail user should be without them.

Scott Morrison has released a second public beta of MailTags for Leopard.

The updated beta features all the improvement of the six private beta versions that he has rolled out since the last public beta.

As a result, MailTags is now faster, more stable and reliable under Leopard. In particular, issues with Preferences, tagging, formatting links to individual emails (message URLs) and rules have been resolved.

MailTags also no longer causes Mail.app to open in the background.

However, it is not all just tidying up. Scott has added two new features to the second beta.

MailTags will now check the indev website for new versions at launch. If an updated version is found, the new release notes will be displayed with a button to open the download page in your browser:

In addition, the new beta adds a MT Debug menu to Mail’s menubar to help testers choose different debugging options. Once upon a time, these options could only be accessed with arcane Terminal commands. Not any more.

What’s next? Now that the foundation of the plugin are solid under Leopard, Scott intends to re-introduce the to-do and event features of MailTags. Soon my niggles with the way Leopard Mail does this itself will be a thing of the past!

Once again, Scott’s warning is worth heeding:

Our private beta testers have worked over the last few weeks to test many functions of MailTags. Our priorities are, as always, data safety (for your mail and your tags), reliability and stability. While we are confident that MailTags meets these requirements, we advise that some issues may have escaped our notice. We strongly recommend you maintain backups of your mail data or avoid using MailTags in critical situations.

Dane Harnett has released a new and improved version of his wide-screen plugin for Leopard Mail.

WideMail 0.1.0 has been ported to Objective C (with help from Scott “MailTags” Morrison) and is smaller and leaner.

But the big feature of this release is the new integrated preview column, which displays the sender, subject and date of the email much more efficiently:
