Bottom posters rejoice! QuoteFix plugin is here
Nothing raises the temperature among email aficionados like the debate over top-posting and bottom-posting in replies.
I have my own barbaric views
on this topic.
QuoteFix is a plugin for mail.app that answers every bottom-poster’s heart-felt cry.
When installed, it places the cursor below the original message, or below the selection if you highlighted some part of the message before hitting the reply button.
And it does it well:

It also claims to remove the signature from the original message and to remove unnecessary empty lines from the original message.
I have found performance more patchy on these two fronts, but the plugin is still in active beta development, so it’s unreasonable to expect too much.
If bottom posting is your thing and you use mail.app, you will want to test it for yourself.
Get the QuoteFix plugin
and read the installation instructions on its Google Code page.

This doesn’t work for me. It doesn’t focus back on the message window after I click reply. I have to click in the message to start typing. This is on the Leopard version (build 24).

I would have to say I would be very wary of using a plugin that relies on private APIs for this kind of function. I’m using a combination of Applescript and FastScripts from Red Sweater to achieve this at the moment and I suspect that will have more longevity.

I’m a supporter of both top- and bottom-posting. I see uses for both in my daily workflow, and often switch between the two depending on message content and length, participants, whether it’s possible to quote just a small portion in my reply, etc.
So what I would REALLY like to see is a similar plug-in that gave me the option at time of hitting Reply to select either top- or bottom-posting, must the way that Mail now allows me to select between Reply and Reply All.
In fact, now that I think about it, Mail allows me to toggle between Reply and Reply All even *after* I’ve selected one. So the PERFECT top/bottom quote plug-in would also all me to make a choice, but also allow me to change my mind after the fact.
Options!

Well well, thanks to the excellent Hawkwings site, I’ve discovered a way to implement some of my my options-galore solution to this. It’s Gruber’s bottom-post Applescript.
I’ve now attached this script to a macro (using Keyboard Maestro, but QuicKeys or FastScripts would work as well), given it the keyboard shortcut Option-Cmd-R, and voilà! I can’t do the after-the-fact toggle between top- and bottom-post, but I can toggle between Reply and Reply All after the fact.
