Easy Growl alerts in iCal

I cal GrowlSome time ago, while I wasn’t watching, Thomas Aylott updated his clever scripts which make iCal able to pipe its alarms through to Growl.

Previously, when Hawk Wings last blogged it, the process of activating the scripts was rather difficult and involved a lot of digging around in iCal’s guts.

Now Thomas has packaged up the scripts in a disk image along with step-by-step instructions on how to install them:

Growlical

Four steps and you are done. Then you can enjoy Growl’s alerts instead of the iCal’s big scary messages with the jangly alarm clock.

The disk image is available on Thomas’s web site.ical, growl, notifications, scripts, hacks, tips

Just remember to do all these steps every time you do a system update. You never know when sneaky ole Mr Jobs is going to undo all your 1337 hackery. ;)

FYI: It’s a good thing to rename the scripts these replace so that you have the old copies, in the event you want to reverse thing later. I appended “-old” to their name, which did the trick.

The Command-D shortcut (File > Duplicate) has long been a quick way to clone original files/folders in Finder before making changes. And the newer File > Create Archive of “…” can also be useful for preserving originals.

Seems worth mentioning Finder 101 basics like that instead of assuming even Mac OS veterans know about them (since they’ve surprisingly often and repeatedly proven that they don’t).

Hi Thomas, I know I’m an idiot, but I’ve no idea what step three means…

    a welcome script!
but one thing: the possibility to change the auto date to user’s own preference would be fantastic…
    any suggestions?! cheers,

Schöne Anleitung zur Verwendung von Growl zur Erinnerung von iCal-Terminen.

Mitgedacht: Die Growl-Meldung verschwindet nicht einfach, sondern erst nach einem Klick auf selbige!

    Open Apple Address Book.
Select menu Card > Go to My Card.
Click the Edit button on the bottom.
Add the email address Growl as an email address.

Optionally, you can Enable private “Me” card in tge vCard section of the Address Book preferences and then uncheck the Growl email address from public.

What do you mean by “auto date”?

sorry, I wasn’t so clear, I realised: when I set an alarm for a new event, I would like to see listed a specific set in lower section, like: “Send an email at Growl next day at 9:00AM”. Like my own default set.
this would save me the task of setting this up line by line, each time, for each new event.
this little issue made me look into QuickSilver in the first place. while I kept QS to open apps and access contact in Address Book, I stopped creating Event and ToDo with it because you have to enter dates under the US format.
    cheers,

Ahh, I see what you mean. This can’t help you with that.

All this script does is let you send an email alert to Growl instead of a normal email. It doesn’t add an alarm type or a way of adding alarms or anything.

    thanks Thomas!
still a better option from the iCal alarm pop-up window, now buried away…
