New Mail Sound: Get Scully in your Inbox
Tired of Mail’s discreet new mail sound and thirsting for something more exotic? Got work colleagues that you want to drive crazy?
A collection of 38 various “You’ve got mail” audio files
could be just the thing.
It includes soundbites from the delightfully husky Scully (”Have you checked your email this morning, Mulder?”), Bugs Bunny, Homer Simpson, a nerd, Ausin Powers, the Adams Family and more.
Changing the sound Mail makes when new mail arrives is easy.
Save the audio file you want from the collection or find one of your own and put it somewhere memorable.
Open up the General pane of Mail.app’s Preferences and select the drop-down menu for “New Mail Sound”:

The “Add / Remove…” option allows you to navigate to the audio file want. Click “Add”, find your file and Mail will copy it into your ~/Library/Sounds folder and add it as an option to the drop-down menu.

Doesn’t work. Saved the Scully files and the file is greyed out as are all the other onesdownloaded from that site. I am on OSX 10.4.7
Did anyone here try this or just write about it?

Using Quicktime, convert the .wav files to .aif, then place them in the Sounds folder in your Library folder inside your home directory, then pull up Preferrences and select the announcement you want.

Wav format is fine.
I tried the Bugs Bunny one. Previously I was using a Chinese Gong sound I found here:

It’s a fairly dramatic way to introduce one’s mail, but maybe I’ll use Bugs for awhile.

Hi winegirl - As others are suggesting and as my own experience confirms, it works fine. Are you saving the files in the right format?

I’m using a Duo Core iMac running 10.4.8. The .wav files bombed Mail. Converting them to .aif solved the problem. As one says in polite company, “I dunno, maybe it’s me!”

Well, I went back and converted the files back to .wav format and everything works just swell, so… don’t listen to a thing I say, not even this!
Doh!

This article suggests using either aiff or wav files but adds:
“Be sure they are AIFF files if you want them to be usable by other applications (such as System Preferences).”
