IMAP IDLE plugin 1.03: Slimmer, more robust
Since first releasing his IMAP IDLE plugin for Mail.app just over a week ago, Michael Rothwell has been churning out the updates.
He has just released the fourth revision (1.03) which features significant improvements. Not only is it just a ghost of its former self (40KB instead of the previous 1MB), the latest version now uses Mail.app’s API instead of relying on AppleScript, fixes a threading bug that could crash Mail, and handles online/offline, active/inactive accounts much better.
If you are already using it and liking it, you will want this update. If you tried and it didn’t perform for you, it’s worth trying again.
You can get it from Michael’s web site

Hi, I currently use Microsoft Entourage on my iMac (intel) and started to consider moving all 3 of my mail accounts to the MAC Mail application. Can you advise me what kinds of key functions I would gain vs what I would loose? Is it worth the move? The only reason I am considering it is that I trialed a project manager software package called Merlin and it integrates with Mail and not Entourage. I also recently got a .Mac account which seems to integrate better with Mail and iCal.
Any comments or advice would be much appreciated

Hi Steve,
This is a favourite topic. Loads of people have written about their experiences with the two clients. If you do a search for “Mail.app” and “Entourage” in the search box on the top right of Hawk Wing’s front page, you will turn up tons of hits like this:

I just tested this with my Exchange 2003 server and it works great. Just thought I would mention this since the information on his site indicated that it was untested with Exchange. Now I can increase the POLL timeout and still get notified immediately of new mail. I like it!
