Great tip Gibbons. Especially since that creates a plain-text email, and not a rich-text email.

Safari's command-shift-i would create a rich text email even when I specified plain text in mail.app prefs.

OS X 10.6.1

[...] Like the keyboard shortcut for emailing a URL in Safari, this is another tip that may not be as well-known as it should be. A number of people emailed to say that they would like to see more “basic tips” on Hawk Wings, so I’m going to town on this one. Power users turn away now….
You can create a Bookmarks Bar shortcut if you need a button for this function by dragging any old URL to the Bookmarks Bar as a seed, then go to the Bookmarks view and change the URL of the newly-added bookmark to the following javascript:

javascript:location.href='mailto:?SUBJECT='+document.title+%20'&BODY='+document.title+'%5Cn%3C'+escape(location.href)+'%3E'

I named the bookmark 'm' (for "mail this link")so that it doesn't take a lot of space on the bookmarks bar.

The tip omits one vital detail: it's a tip for Safari, and not Firefox or other browser. (There's a mention of Safari at the end, but no mention up front, where the tip itself lies.)

Apple, be sure future tips are clear on all the details!

That extension does the trick - once added and Firefox restarted, the right button shows up. Thanks much.

Scott, the toolbar button adds the current URL for me, but I think I might use using <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1770/" rel="nofollow">the "Send Link" Extension</a> <img src="http://www.hawkwings.net/images/extlink.jpg"/>

This is one area where FIrefox is weak (unless there is an extension I don't know about). The button for the toolbar only seems to open mail - it doesn' do anything. The shortcut Command-shift-M opens a new message, but doesn't add the link. I suppose I should attempt some applescript or something, but its easier just to highlight it to Tim!

FWIW, Omniweb has had a "Send Link" button for donkey's (at least since version 5.0, if not earlier). Add it to your navigation toolbar by customising it. Alternatively, just select Send Link from the File menu. No bookmarklet required.
