It's absolutely stark raving insane and simply Halliburton-level greedy for SmileOnMyMac to take a formerly donationware product and decide to start charging users $30 for it. I'm thinking that the first word of the company's name -- SmileOnMyMac -- should instead be renamed for another bodily process that even begins with the same first letter. It'd be a more apt description of their pricing strategy and the disrespect it shows to the Mac community.

Are you still able to get hold of the old version? Where?

Me, from my download archive. :-)
I save downloads of most distributions for software I currently use, have used, or may possibly use. It's convenient not downloading again if/when I (re)install it.

I am just wondering if someone can compare the commercial version to the previous donationware version.

I didn't see that info in the distribution or on the web site, but here's a revision history starting with the first commercial version from the "What's new in this version" product info on VersionTracker:

[1.3]
• Nest snippets by referring to other snippets via "%snippet:[abbreviation]%" ...
• You can now create snippets directly from selected text by means of the TextExpander Service.
• TextExpander's preference pane can now be resized vertically.
• Fixed a bug where TextExpander did not insert snippets correctly while a hybrid keyboard layout (e.g., Dvorak Querty) was active.
[1.3.1]
• Dramatically improved performance for large snippet libraries
• Option to insert snippets using cross-platform compatible image format (PNG)
• Fixed crashing bug when using date / time in formatted text
[1.4]
• User-specified delimiters (“Set Delimiters…” button in Preferences tab)
• Import comma- and tab-delimited text, RTF, and RTFD files
• Choose TextExpander or Textpander style menu bar icon in Preferences
• Sort snippets by date created (helps when locating import groups)
• Sort snippets by date modified (helps when tracking recent changes)
• Mac OS X 10.4 required

No. The donationware version is no longer available. Please note: I just want to make clear that I am NOT whining about Textpander going commercial. I am just wondering if someone can compare the commercial version to the previous donationware version.
