Wouldn’t it be great if you could access your Gmail in Apple Mail over IMAP? A long time ago I posted about a guy who claimed he had this working, but nothing more was ever heard about it.
Now, it seems that you can, if you know a bit of Perl and are not in a hurry.
Julio Vidal has discovered 
a Perl module which does exactly that.
He got it working with Mail although it was slow.
I won’t pretend to understand a fifth of what he writes, but it sounds promising:

If some red-hot Perl coder passes by, takes an interest in this and is able to package it up in a way that normal people like me can understand and use, I’d love to hear about it.

I have been using Gmail with Apple mail.app for a long time now. It’s very simple. Log-in to Gmail in your web browser, Click on the Settings link in the upper right, click the Forwarding and POP tab, then choose to Enable POP. There is also a configuration instructions link right there as well that will walk you through mail.app settings. it couldn’t be simpler!
Jack, the point is that this allows you to use IMAP. POP3 access was made available some time ago and is well-documented. IMAP has several advantages over POP, especially if you read your mail on more than one machine.

Jack, that’s not the same. I’m already using POP3 in Mail.app to read my Gmail but it has the disadvantage of REMOVING the mail from your Gmail inbox which means you can’t read it from more than one computer or mix reading it via the web & in mail.app.
With IMAP the mail will remain in place on Gmail so you can read it with different computers or email clients or from the web.
