Skype up your Address Book
macOSXHints is running a tip
with a couple of AppleScripts that add Contextul menus for Skype calls to your Address Book.
It includes options for dialing numbers with Skypeout and for using Skypenames.
AppleScript is, of course, excellent. It’s free, built-in and when it works gives your inner geek a nice warm glow. It is also a bit forbidding and has a time-consuming learning curve (despite what the books say).
There are other options. You can find a pre-compiled AppleScript for this in an earlier Hawk Wings post.
If you have more money than time, you might like to try two shareware solutions—BuddyPop and the Address Book menubar utility JABMenu
.

Shouldn’t that be the other way around? ‘If you have more money than time’ ;)

Absolutely, it should. Thanks for pointing that out.

Since i got addicted to Quicksilver, my Skype usage has increased a lot. How come? Well, by adding a custom number type to a contact (the username of my Skype mate) I am now able to make calls to both ordinary phones AND Skype accounts using nothing but Quicksilver.
Check out details for my setup here:

I should have thought of including Quicksilver. Is there anything that app can’t do!

Skype already adds a “Dial with Skype” contextual menu item to the Address Book. It calls numbers with full country prefix only and skype names.

News: The Skype BETA 1.5.0.47 (released today) allows you to enter a default prefix it will use for numbers without country prefix. So from my point of view there is no need for any applescripting to hook Skype to the Address Book.
