Mail.appetizer 1.2b4: Plays better with Mail.app

mailappetizerA year ago today Bronson Beta released an updated fourth beta of its Mail.appetizer notification plugin.

When I first wrote this post a few days ago, I misread the 2005 for 2006 (Whoops!). But my laziness is your gain, as it gives this excellent plugin a much deserved run, even if nothing has changed. That’s my line, and I’m sticking to it :)

This version hides itself better when Mail.app is the active app.

Since I first blogged about Mail.appetizer , it’s got better in other ways. It is now a universal binary and 10.4.x compatible.

Its notifications are still as beautiful as ever:

I read in my earlier post that in September last year, I was mad for this app. Since then, I have learnt to wean myself off “instant email notification gratification”.

But if you like to know about your new mail right away, you can’t go past this. GrowlMail doesn’t have half the flexibility and smoothness of Mail.Appetizer.

Mail.Appetizer is donation-ware and is available from the developer’s web site .

UPDATE: Italics mark a revision on 11 July 2006.mail.app, apple mail, notification, plugins, in your face, universal

This would be a lot more useful if this were a stand alone app and not dependant on Mail.app running.

I’m wanting something that will check mail directly on the POP server and allow me to preview, delete, filter messages directly on the server before I download them.

    Hmmm…. Something like Mail.app ? :)

If you use Mail.app, it’s already downloaded. I want to view it from the server without downloading it first.

Is there a way to do that in Mail.app? View mail on the server and then checking (?) which ones to download?

Don’t worry if you don’t understand why I need something like this. I used this type of program when I ran Windows and I found it pretty useful. I’m just trying to find a similar app for Mac.

I’ve always liked this app — I teeter between it, then go to GrowlMail, then decide to go back, it’s good to see it improving.

I’m not one to go into OCD fits if I don’t get my mail immediately, so I am not necessarily the target audience for this app. However, it came to mind that an integration with Mail Act On and Mail Tags would be fantastic. With a couple of keystrokes, you can file the incoming message without going into mail.app.

    Is this possible?

  6. Tim says:

I don’t think this can be done. Probably the best option is clicking the “Open Mail.app” icon on the botttom of the Mail.Appetizer and take it from there.

I’m a bit confused — has a new update to Mail.appetizer actually been released? The last one that I see on the site is 1.2 beta 4, which is dated July 7, 2005.

Hmmm…. I think I am bit confused too. Thanks for pointing that out.
