Is it just me, or do these replacement icons not work? The Get Info/Inspector window show a generic icon (i.e. a Preview PNG or Preview ICO icon). If you view the larger preview – either in the Get Info window or in the Finder – you do indeed see the custom icon. But if you copy and paste that into Mail.app’s Get Info window, what gets pasted is the generic icon.

Is there something wrong with these icons, or is it just my system?

Why the hating on IMAP? How else might one keep their mailboxes consistent between one machine and another?

It’s a just a joke, Josh. (Not a very good one, maybe).

I’m an IMAP fanatic myself, which is why I find I need the odd bit of light relief in the face of Mail.app’s IMAP quirks.

  4. Josh Santangelo says:

Agreed, I wish it was less quirky as well, but I haven’t found a client that isn’t (Thunderbird included). It continually surprises me that no one’s made an implementation that “just works.”

In reading some talk on the subject, some seem to think that the protocol is just fundamentally broken and should be replaced, but I never hear of any actual work being done in that area.

Cartman– I have the same problem. Even using CandyBar I can’t get them to work. Alas.

  6. Tim says:

Yeah, I can’t get them to work wither. I’m used to running Windows icons through Iconpgrapher (or similar) but even that doesn’t work. :(

I have converted the PNG files to OS X icons via Pixadex. You can download the result here: http://irulan.net/dropbox/mailicons-mac.zip

Since I have no authorisation for the artist for redistribution I will only leave it there for a couple of days and then remove it. To make your own icons out of simply any graphic, you can use Pixadex (http://www.iconfactory.com/px_home.asp).

  8. Tim says:

That’s fantastic. Pixadex it is, then. Thanks. :)

    You’re welcome! :)

BTW: I just found out that the artist offers them for OS X as well. You can find the authorized version here: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/35243633/

    Enjoy!

I made these on a windows machine, and I never got a chance to test them on OSX. You can use Icons2icns, and it will convert them and they should work just peachy. Thanks for the love guys!!!
