RapidoWrite: Accelerate your typing

rapidowriteRapidoWrite is a snippet manager like TextExpander.

It allows you to store text strings that you type repeatedly and to insert them into your typing with ease and speed. I find that these apps make me much more productive in Mail.app and elsewhere.

The Preferences set-up will be familiar to users of Text(Ex)pander:

rapidowrite_prefs

Through it, you enter your frequent text strings and an abbreviation to identify them.

When you are typing, a pop-up window appears when the app’s input manager recognises a matching keystroke combination:

rapidowrite_action

If you have several snippet with abbreviations that begin with the same keystrokes (as above) it offers you all the options.

Its great advantage over TextExpander is its cost—it’s free.

However, unlike TextExpander it only does text. Support for images is planned for a future release, the developer says, but for the moment TextExpander has the edge.

RapidoWrite is freeware and is available from the developer’s web site .mail.app, apple mail, snippets, textexpander, text strings, typing acceleration, productivity

I wonder whether it requires the Universal Access option ‘Enable access for assistive devices’ to be enabled? Parallels Desktop has problems with that enabled, yet Textpander requires it, which is a frustrating conflict between two of my favorite apps.

It doesn’t require it to be checked, but does require the app to be Cocoa–so no luck if you want to use it in Word, TextWrangler, or other such apps.

I use TypeIt4Me. It’s been around since System 7, doesn’t require “Enable Access for Assistive Devices” – or at least Version 3 doesn’t – and works in anything – Word, Mail, the Finder whatever. It doesn’t do images, but I don’t know why anyone would want this. It speeds up typing fantastically. It isn’t freeware, but at just over 20 bucks, it’s not expensive. David Pogue tipped me off to this, more years ago than I care to think, and I use this, and the “shorthand” system I’ve made with it to fast almost at the speed of speech.

I don’t work for Riccardo – the developer – or sell his products, but I have the greatest respect for TypeIt4Me. This is the original. This was the first one – even before Word copied it with AutoType.

    Yours sincerely,

    John Davis

i would class this one as nag-ware. once installed an extremely annoying little “subscribe” message flashes on your screen every 5 seconds or so whenever yu are typing.

not freeware at all. avoid it

  5. Eric says:

This is a wonderful utility! where is the annoying subscribe message ??? There is no message like that! I think that you talk about another utility !

  6. Greg says:

nope – i am talking about this utility. i downloaded it from the link above, installed it, used it for a while and a little window popped up every 5 seconds or so while i was typing, asking me to donate. so i deleted the utility and all its library files and preferences.

i can;t unerstand why it only does this for me.

  7. app4mac says:

We confirm Eric post : there is no window asking you to donate ! Greg talk about another utility! RapidoWrite is completely free and there is no messages for donation.

  8. Greg says:

sorry app4mac but i am not lying and i am not mistaken. i downloaded and installed RapidoWrite from this website – http://www.app4mac.com/freewares.html and immediately afterwards i was getting a nagware reminder message every 5 seconds whenever i typed. it would not go away until i deleted the app.

i’d like to say using your software was a good experience but it was not.

i swear this is true. i am not imagining things… now tell me why.

i am reluctant to try it again.

  9. app4mac says:

Hi Greg, I’m sure that this window was not coming from our software ! Just try again ! Only an overlay window appears when you write an abbrevation! The overlay window allows you to choose the text to add with the ‘enter’ key! Nothing else! Maybe you were confuse on this point! There is really no messages for donation or adverstising ! Try it again!
