Lightning: A calendar for Thunderbird

thunderbirdThe world of email clients for Mac is seeing some significant change.

Not long ago Entourage got more Mail-like, gaining iSync and Spotlight support. Now Thunderbird gets more Entourage-like, gaining an extension that provides integrated calendaring and to dos.

Lightning adds a calendar to the Thunderbird interface, not unlike Boris Anthony’s mock-up for a possible Mail.app plugin.

The extension is already well-featured, offering to dos, scheduling, daily, weekly and monthly views, an auto-generated “Agenda” of upcoming events and more.

This is an excellent start for an extension. It’s only at v0.1 and it already incorporates so much. I can even subscribe to my iCal calendars and have iCal subscribe to my Thunderbird calendar. Sharing. Nice. :)

yeah, it’s a good start — I’ve been using it for the past couple days, it’s a bit flaky (though so is sunbird), and it takes up way too much real estate… but it’s getting there. They need more styling functionality — for those of us with lots of foldered imap accounts, or who use the extension ‘contact sidebar’ so we can have addresses in the main window, now we pretty much have zero room for mail!

But a great start, nonetheless, and a good way to kick the teeth into outlook and entourage. Besides, now my pc users can integrate their mail with publications on a webdav server, sick…
