Office 12’s tutti-frutti interface design
Fire and Fury carries a screenshot
of a compose window (the new Outlook?) from Office 12.
The author has gone over it and highlighted at least eight different styles in the interface.
It’s a horrible mess. Just the kind of thing that Mac users like to pooh-pooh.
Go on, take a look. Rejoice in the simple elegance that is Mail.app’s interface. Enjoy yourself. I did.

That is a mess. But MS has their special way of giving users more than they need, don’t they.
I’m sure their UI team is on that diagram, and are stripping it down as we speak.

Pot, kettle, black? Apple ships, last I counted, 5 differerent window themes, with no way to control them or unify them without hacking the system.

Chances are that’s not a final interface. At least that’s my extrapolation from reading Jensen Harris’s weblog.

@Faisal: Sure. I read the piece by drunkenbatman on how the Mac OS X interface might be in trouble. I’m not a bigot. :)
But at least Apple has the decency to use only one style per app, even if it differs from app to app at the moment. The visual excitement of eight styles in one app is usually avoided.
@David: Thanks for that link. Interesting.
