MySync: .Mac syncing without .Mac

mysyncI like the look of this.

MySync is an app that provides all the benefits of .Mac synchronisation without the need to have a .Mac account.

It allows you to sync your Bookmarks, Calendars, Contacts, Mail Accounts, Rules, Signatures, and Smart Mailboxes between Macs connected on a single local area network.

It uses the Apple Sync engine built-in to Tiger (so requires 10.4+) and configures one computer as the master and the rest as slaves.

The main window shows how it works:

MySync_Window

Be default it will only sync with other computers on the network running under the same short user name, although there is an option to “masquerade” as another user if required.

Of course, MySync’s features do not replace all the benefits of a .Mac account. MySync’s developer provides a comparison of the two on its web site:

I can read this. If you can’t, a larger table can be found on the developer’s web site.

MySync is currently in public beta, offering time-limited licences for the beta trial.

You can download the beta from the developer’s web site.

  1. The fact that it only rendered via a local network makes it hard for me to utilize. If it was over the web, same as .mac, that would be a great sellable product I’m sure many of use would buy.

So for us with an in house server, the .mac system isn’t that useful — we could make remote user logins on our server anyway, and tie them to any machine — that way you can take your preferences, and your desktop with you (a feature in os x server).

I could see it’s usefulness in a small two computer house, though you can’t swap files.

That’s exactly the situation I was thinking of. That’s my situation. If I didn’t have a .Mac account, I would be looking carefully at this.

I think I read somewhere in the documentation last night that the developer is exploring ways to break out of the single network restriction. So it might get even more useful.

  3. If he breaks out fo the single network restriction, he may have solved the heart of most of our problems. The sharing of AddressBooks without having to suffer with LDAP limitations is the holy grail — it can be done with whereabouts and some other hacks, but not as simple and graceful as .mac has it. We’ve hoped Tiger server would give us this, but not yet… if he can go server internal/external network, that would be great.

    Hey Brady,

You’ll love the sound of the updated version, which breaks the LAN restriction and offers syncing to and from any node.
