Yes, the lack of this feature is quite unfortunate. I have been forced to switch to thunderbird as well. But I missed Mail.app’s search capability so much, I found a command-line replacement called mairix, and managed to integrate it with roundcube:

I’ve made a plugin (mailbundle) for Mail.app that support IDLE for IMAP accounts.
