My girlfriend is unable to use Mail because of the way it displays inline attachments with filename truncated. Almost all other programs, including her online gmail, shows the filename as a FULL length, and the icons are SMALL. This functionality is an issue not only in composing, but viewing e-mails. I noticed the following blog that solves the composing issue, to an extent (I’ll explain later), but the viewing issue is still not solved: if she wants to view the file 2007-06-06-MX0342-s3049.doc instead of 2007-06-06-MX0342x-s3049.doc, she will have to save them to finder first (or hover her mouse above each attachment). That wastes a lot of time, when repeated over and over, as is necessary for her work.

With regards to the issue of composing and using Attaché, having the list of items written out does not solve the issue in that the same two file name examples used above will appear AS THE SAME FILE in the Compose window!! That means should she wish to remove one, it would be impossible to distinguish which is which, unless, again, she hovers the mouse over the file and waits…

I’ve been searching the web all over to find a fix to Mail.app to solve such a simple thing as having an attachment list, but have failed to. She is about to be converted to Microsoft Entourage, which also syncs with Apple Address Book, but is of course a completely different program. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Such a simple feature that’s missing (and the annoying truncation of file names) is unfortunately enough to put off someone who takes their e-mail attachments seriously.
