But partly I haven't said anything because I am not sure what to say.  I don't get the same duplication problem in any of my three IMAP accounts.

I guess you have already tried deleting the local caches of your IMAP meesages and letting Mail rebuild them.</description>

The mail count of IMAP subfolders (not the inbox) is still always doubled, and since I use MailEnhancer to display the new mail count of all folders at the dock icon, this number is never correct. :-(</description>
