New .Mac features

dotmac70pxApple has improved its .Mac service.

The combined email and storage quota in a .Mac account has risen from 250MB to 1GB. That’s the big news. You can buy additional storage. I think we probably have Gmail to thank for the quota increase. Thanks.

It now features something called Groups – “your place to get connected with friends and family online”. This looks like a web page template featuring a shared calendar, file and photo sharing and membership list. Perhaps you could start a group to discuss why there is no sign of the uber-widgets promised for so long. I don’t see them.

.Mac users can also benefit from Backup 3, an updated version of Apple’s backup software. The new app offers incremental backups, a variety of pre-set backup options and more flexibility and backup options for people with more than one Mac.

The .Mac website itself is now available in French and German as well as English and Japanese.
