Mail ToolBox: A Cautionary Tale

mailtoolboxHere’s a sad story, one worth telling, before consigning another app to the Plug-in Graveyard.

Mail Toolbox is “the Swiss Army knife for managing e-mailboxes” (so the developer says), an online mail client, a mail watcher, a tool to delete SPAM, a mail notifier, all in one. There’s only one thing wrong with it; the developer is not supporting it, although he seems happy to take people’s money.

Verisontracker and MacUpdate are full of posts like these:

I thought this was a usefull program so I paid the reg fee but BEWARE THIS SOFTWARE DEVELOPER TAKES YOUR MONEY AND DOES NOT RETURN ANY REG CODE!!!! I am now trying to get a refund from Paypal!! (6/10/2005, Version: 1.1)

Unfortunately, another great app dead due to Developer neglect. I am getting more and more hesitant to buy any of these smaller apps as they always seem to take your money and run. A perfectly good idea that worked very well until Tiger. It still works somewhat in Tiger, but if you are going to use it make sure you are running a higher speed processor such as in a G5. Here’s an idea. Since I’ve been waiting a year for my Mail Toolbox registration code–which I paid for in full via PayPal–perhaps someone who already has a code could post it publicly. I’m VERY tired of looking at the words “Not Registered” in my menubar, and of getting the “Buy It Now” sales prompt every time I try to quit the application. (9/19/2005)

Most developers have hearts of gold. But not all of them do. Read around for the experiences of other users before parting with your money.

Mail Toolbox is shareware and available from the developer’s website. However, I wouldn’t if I were you.
