Mail Fixer: Skinning Apple Mail

mailfixer_iconA number of apps exist to replace the new lozenge-buttons of Tiger Mail with the buttons from Panther. Mail Fixer takes that process one step further. It allows you to “skin” Apple Mail’s toolbar in a more flexible way.

One theme is included with the app, which replaces Tiger’s buttons with icons and buttons to match Safari:

MailFixer

Undoing the change is as easy as clicking the “Restore Default Theme” button. It comes with an invitation from the developer to make your own skins and with an outline of how to do it:

Making themes involves a few steps. First, create all files that need modification and give them the exact same name as the ones found in the ../Mail/Contents/Resources folder. Create a new bundle based on the included theme, modifying the Info.plist and Preview.png files accordingly. Drop your images inside the Icons and Buttons folders inside the bundle, let it sit for three minutes in microwave, unrawp, and enjoy.

I was unable to find any other themes for it on the net already. If you know of any, let me know. It is freeware and available from the developer’s website.
