Importing email from Opera
Opera users account for 0.4% of the hits to this site, so someone may want to know how to do this.
Importing email from Opera’s mail client is easy. Opera email files have the *.mbs extension, but are actually in the standard unix mbox format. So to import them, this is all you need to do:
- Select Import Mailboxes from the File menu.
- Select “other” and hit “Continue”.
- Navigate to “~/Library/Preferences/Opera Preferences/Mail/” (you may need to go one step further, into the “store” directory. I had to for the test IMAP account I set up).
- When you see your *.mbs files, click “Choose”.
- All the emails will appear in Mail in a folder called “Import” in the Mailbox list.
- Drag and drop them where you want them.

this is exactly what I did, but unfortunately does not work properly.
i have approx 15000 messages (received and sent), but I could ‘only’ recover 5000. And the most important ones (last year) do not appear at all.
do you think this could depend on the number of messages?
thank you very much

Hmm…. No, I don;t know what went wrong there.
Have you tried using Emailchemy?
It’s free for a one-off use and claims to be able to manage Opera mailboxes.
