Launching Apple Mail in a hidden state
In Panther Mail could be set to start “hidden” as a login item. That seems to be broken in Tiger. Not a big deal, but some users find it an annoyance. Now they can use HiddenMail, an AppleScript written by Jeremy Carlson, which will start Mail in a “hidden state”.
To install it, download the Hidden Mail script
and move it to your Applications folder. Go to System Preferences > Accounts > Your Account > Login Items. Remove Mail if it is there and add HiddenMail.
Now when you login, Mail will start hidden.

Thanks ever so much – this was really bugging me! I submitted a request to Apple to fix this, but this will keep me happy in the meantime.

Now I find that I am using AppleScripts more and more, both within Apple Mail (Mail Scripts, Hidden Mail, MultipleReply) and in order to integrate with Mail when I am in other apps (Feedmailer, Scale to Mail). Fastscripts helps me to do all that better. [...]

[...] In a perverse way, I almost wish that 10.4.3 had killed more tips and work-arounds, like the ones for Broken long URLs in Apple Mail or launching Apple Mail in a hidden state.
