Gmail gets more flexible
Apple Mail users who have Gmail accounts will be glad to hear of a new feature silently added to the service in the last few days. Gmail now allows you to modify the sender information in emails by changing the content of the “From:” field.
Previously all email had to be identified as yourusername@gmail.com. Now you can add other addresses and select any one of them when composing mail. However, the new feature has limitations:
(i) You can only add new address if you have set your language preferences to “English (US)”. You can use the new addresses with another preference set, but will need to set it to the US setting again when you want to edit the address list. (I noticed as I was doing this that there’s a “send mail as unicode” option also available, but again only to those with English (US) as their default language choice).
(ii) Gmail still adds a Sender:yourusername@gmail.com header to the emails, which causes Outlook to display the email as sent on your behalf. Something of a bummer, given the number of people who use that program, but maybe not quite such bad news in the Apple world.

I think this site is really cool and helpful, an original and great idea for a blog! Since you seem to be the expert on all things Mail.app, I was wondering if Mail can get mail from a gmail account. I know the http plugin gets hotmail but what about other webmail serivices like Yahoo and Lycos. I figured you would be the one to ask. Keep up the good work!
