Serial Mail: Bulk mail-outs in Apple Mail

SerialMailSerial Mail 3.5 is a plug-in that generates bulk mail-outs from a template using data provided by an Address Book group. It is not as polished as dedicated bulk-mailers like MailDrop, Email Merge or IntelliMerge, but may suit those users who don’t need the power features of those apps.

You need to write the template yourself using pre-defined fields. It’s not difficult. Full instructions are available.

The program then processes the message body of the template and replaces strings like < ab:first_name /> and < ab:last_name /> with their corresponding value from the Address Book for each recipient. It supports almost all the entries in the Mac OS X Address Book. You can also send files as attachments.

The emails that the program generates can either be saved to your drafts folder for review or sent straight off.

SerialMail is donation-ware and is available from the developer’s website.

UPDATE: 3.7.0 fixes a bug that prevented the tag from working properly in Panther. (11 October 2005).
