Five useful tech notes for Apple Mail users
Apple uses tech notes to provide a lot of useful information. You can find a full list of the tech notes for Apple Mail 2.0 in the Support section of its web site. After the break are the five that I have found most useful.
1. Backing up mailboxes and address describes the files required to do a safe backup of Apple Mail and all its settings and of your address book.
2. How to create a nested mailbox is a good tip for neat freaks. Of course you can always drag and drop them, but this is quicker.
3. How to remove unneeded files after importing mail from Panther into Tiger lists the redundant files that can be safely removed when Mail is up and running in Tiger. My Mail folder was reduced by almost 30% by this tip.
4. Removing old addresses from the previous recipients list shows you how to remove unwanted addresses from Apple Mail’s “automatic address guessing” system. Apple Mail may try to match the name of the person you are sending an email to with an old address of theirs that once worked but is no longer current. Annoying for everyone. This tip stops that.
5. How redirecting a message works. Apple Mail has a cool feature that many other email clients lack. It allows you to forward an email to someone with their address in the To: field and the original sender’s address in the From: field. You don’t appear at all, unlike when you forward an email.

My sister needs to know how to send email with confirmation that it is delivered and read. Can Mail do this? She claims she could do it in OutlookExpress on Win98. This feature was so important to her she returned her iMac G5 for a refund, because couldn’t tell her how to do it.
